Dear Colleague,

On behalf of the International Trade Centre (ITC) and the German Development Institute/ Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE), we cordially invite you to a webinar on:

Increasing the development impact of FDI: Creating linkages between foreign investors and the local economy in light of the Covid-19 pandemic

26 October 2021, 15:00-16:15 Central European Time (CET)

This is the 9th of a webinar series on investment facilitation for development, held in the framework of a joint ITC/DIE project on Investment Facilitation for Development.

Like all ITC/DIE events, participation in the webinar is free of charge. However, it is necessary to register for the event (please click here), to receive the meeting link details.

The webinar will focus on increasing the development impact of foreign direct investment (FDI) by creating linkages between foreign investors and the local economy in light of the Covid-19 pandemic. Covid-19 has accelerated the need of supporting strategic alliances between foreign investors and local suppliers and has brought into light the important role the government and specifically investment promotion agencies (IPAs) have in creating linkages between foreign investors and the local economy. Such linkages provide direct benefits to foreign investors while also dispersing the benefits of investment widely within the domestic economy, thereby enhancing the development impact of FDI.

The Covid-19 pandemic has had a strong impact on local suppliers, and especially on small and medium sized enterprises with whom foreign investors often have different types of linkages. As a response IPAs will need to assist investors in finding new suppliers when existing ones are unable to continue operating due to the pandemic. Such assistance can include the development of supplier databases and matchmaking portals, supplier development programmes, and additional aftercare services depending on investors’ needs.

The webinar will focus on the establishment and operational dimensions of supplier development programmes and databases, including how to maximize linkages and positive spillover effects for the host economy, how to upgrade local firms and attract foreign suppliers, and how to design and implement investor aftercare programms that facilitate retention, expansion, and diversification of FDI while deepening links with local suppliers.

The webinar will be conducted in an interactive manner and allow for questions by participants.

The webinar will be delivered through Zoom. You will receive details on how to join the webinar in a subsequent email after your registration.

We look forward to welcoming you to the webinar!

With kind regards,
