U.S. MAY CUT SOME VACCINE DOSES IN HALF Moncef Slaoui, head of the federal vaccine program Operation Warp Speed, said officials were in talks with Moderna and the Food and Drug Administration about giving some people half the dose of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine to speed vaccinations. “We know that for the Moderna vaccine, giving half of the dose to people between the ages of 18 and 55, two doses, half the dose, which means exactly achieving the objective of immunizing double the number of people with the doses we have,” Slaoui said. ALL LIVING EX-DEFENSE CHIEFS DECRY ELECTION ATTACKS Every living former secretary of defense, including two who served under Trump, signed an extraordinary rebuke of efforts to undermine the results of the 2020 election. In a stern opinion piece published in The Washington Post, the bipartisan group of officials, who have served under every president since George H.W. Bush, said it is time for the nation to move on or risk instability and encourage “adversaries seeking to take advantage of the situation.” [HuffPost]
NUNES, JORDAN IN LINE FOR MEDALS OF FREEDOM Trump is expected to award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Reps. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) and Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), two partisan political allies who defended him throughout his presidency and during his impeachment. Nunes was one of Trump’s loudest cheerleaders in his efforts to undermine the Justice Department’s investigation of Russian interference into the 2016 election. [HuffPost]

1 DEAD, 2 WOUNDED IN TEXAS CHURCH SHOOTING A 21-year-old man who hid from police in an East Texas church was charged with first-degree murder and felony assault in a shooting that left the pastor dead and two other people injured Sunday. Authorities had been using dogs and drones to search for the man following a car chase, and the pastor of the nearby Starrville Methodist Church discovered him hiding in a church bathroom Sunday morning. INDIA AUTHORIZES 2 COVID-19 VACCINES India authorized two COVID-19 vaccines, paving the way for a huge inoculation program in the world’s second-most populous country. The country’s drug regulator gave emergency authorization for the vaccine developed by Oxford University and U.K.-based drugmaker AstraZeneca, and another developed by the Indian company Bharat Biotech. CALIFORNIA FUNERAL HOMES RUN OUT OF SPACE As communities across the country feel the pain of a surge in coronavirus cases, funeral homes in the hot spot of Southern California say they must turn away grieving families as they run out of space for the bodies piling up. The head of the state funeral directors association says mortuaries are being inundated as the United States passes a grim tally of 350,000 COVID-19 deaths. HOUSE REELECTS PELOSI AS SPEAKER In an extraordinarily close vote, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) was reelected speaker of the House Sunday, securing the gavel for the fourth time in her nearly 34-year career in Congress. The House voted 216-209 for Pelosi over Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) with three members voting “present.” In a stark difference from previous elections, there were hardly any defections from either party. MINORITY-OWNED COMPANIES WAITED MONTHS FOR PPP LOANS Thousands of minority-owned small businesses came last in the government’s coronavirus relief program as many struggled to find banks that would accept their applications or were disadvantaged by the terms of the program. Data from the Paycheck Protection Program released Dec. 1 show that many minority owners desperate for a relief loan didn’t receive one until the PPP’s last few weeks while many more white business owners were able to get loans earlier in the program. GOHMERT BACKPEDALS ON 'BE VIOLENT' COMMENTS Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) issued a statement backpedaling on his suggestion that street violence is the only recourse in the wake of his lawsuit loss to overturn the results of the democratic presidential election. Gohmert issued his call for violence on the far-right news channel Newsmax, saying 'you got to go to the streets and be as violent as antifa and BLM.” [HuffPost]

Carl Bernstein Says Latest Trump Tapes Are ‘Far Worse’ Than Watergate
Audio of the president trying to persuade a Georgia official to change election results is “the ultimate smoking gun tape,” the Watergate journalist said.

The leaked tapes of Donald Trump trying to pressure Georgia’s secretary of state to overturn the president’s election defeat are “far worse” than what occurred in the Watergate scandal, journalist Carl Bernstein said Sunday.
Bernstein, whose reporting of the 1972 political scandal led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon, said the bombshell tapes of Trump were evidence of an attempted coup.
“It’s not déjà vu. This was something far worse than occurred in Watergate,” Bernstein told CNN. “We have both a criminal president of the United States in Donald Trump and a subversive president of the United States at the same time in this one person.”
In audio recordings published by The Washington Post Sunday, Trump urged Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to “find” exactly enough votes to overturn his loss in that state to President-elect Joe Biden in the Nov. 3 election. Trump repeatedly insisted he had won. At one point, Trump seemed to threaten legal consequences if Raffensperger did not investigate his baseless claims.
“This is the ultimate smoking gun tape,” Bernstein said. “It is the tape with the evidence of what this president is willing to do to undermine the electoral system and illegally, improperly and immorally try to instigate a coup.”
In any other presidency, this tape would be evidence enough to result in impeachment, a conviction in the Senate and a call by members of Congress ― Republicans included ― for the president’s immediate resignation, Bernstein said.
“We’re not going to hear that,” Bernstein added. “We might from a few Republicans, but that’s what’s really called for here. And the one thing we should recall from Watergate was that the heroes of Watergate were Republicans who would not tolerate Richard Nixon’s conduct.”
