Making it Happen: Legal and Policy Tools to Accelerate Energy System Decarb...
by Sabin Center for Climate Change Law, and Energy Innovation
Actions and Detail Panel Event Information Law, and Energy Innovation Description Event description: New York State’s version of the 'Green New Deal,' unveiled in January 2019, sets a target of obtaining 70% of the state's electricity from renewable sources by 2030 and 100% from 'carbon free' sources by 2040. Several other U.S. states, as well as various countries around the world, have set similarly ambitious goals for decarbonizing electricity generation. But that is just the first step in a broader transformation of the energy economy, which will include increasing efficiency and electrifying transport, buildings, and industry. While policymakers increasingly know where they're going, questions remain about how to get there. This event will explore legal and policy tools that can accelerate the transition away from fossil fuel-based economies in key sectors: electricity, transportation, buildings, and industry. The event will feature presentations by the authors of two recent books on the topic: (1) Designing Climate Solutions: A Policy Guide for Low-Carbon Energy, co-authored by Sonia Aggarwal; and (2) Legal Pathways to Deep Decarbonization in the U.S., co-authored by Michael Gerrard.
