About the Program
Fraud, corruption, compromised institutional integrity, poverty, discrimination, social polarization, low trust levels, populist political agendas - all these issues beset different parts of the world. In South Africa, they are especially urgent, dramatic and intense. Failure to address them threatens the success of business and the country.
In response to this challenge, the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS), Africa's leading business school, in 2016 established the Ethics and Governance Think Tank, a ground-breaking initiative. The Think Tank's purpose is to explore and influence how business can follow a more ethical approach, thereby building trust and helping to secure a more successful, sustainable future for the business community and the country. It works to bring together business, government and civil society leaders, and generate creative insights and ideas which can be translated into pragmatic plans of action.
Underpinning its work is a basic premise: ethics must not be seen as abstract, predictable and boring and merely an 'add-on' to core commercial activities. Ethics is practical, dynamic and innovative and belongs at the center of organizational decision making.
Gideon Pogrund and Marius Oosthuizen will discuss the aims and activities of the Think Tank, and share experiences and insights with global relevance. About the Speakers
Working with senior business, government and civil society leaders, Rabbi Gideon Pogrund conceptualized and founded the Ethics and Governance Think Tank at the University of Pretoria's Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS). He is the director of the Think Tank and is a GIBS faculty member. He is the co-founder of Ethics Evolution, a consultancy which helps blue-chip corporations improve their ethics management. He holds an MA in Social and Political Science from Trinity College, Cambridge University, and previously worked as a commodity trader for Louis Dreyfus. He served as the Director of Education and Political Affairs in the Office of the Chief Rabbi of South African.
Marius Oosthuizen is an entrepreneur, academic and strategy consultant. He is a member of faculty at the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS), University of Pretoria, South Africa. He teaches Strategic Foresight on the GIBS Executive MBA and Executive Education programmes, which are ranked among the top 50 globally by the Financial Times of London. Marius was voted the institute's top lecturer by the GIBS MBA graduates of 2017. He also serves as the programme manager for the Future of Business Project, that uses strategic foresight and scenario planning methods to explore the future of South Africa, Africa and BRICS, and works in the Ethics and Governance Think Tank developing an Ethics Barometer for South Africa.
Marius regularly works with business leaders, policy makers and civil society organizations, using his expertise in stakeholder dialogue, scenario planning, strategic foresight and systems thinking to create future-orientated strategy. In his capacity as a consultant, Marius has worked with multiple sectors, including; IT, financial services, insurance, agriculture, manufacturing (chemicals & plastics), warehousing and logistics, oil and gas, international relations, social development, tourism, city and regional planning and mining engineering.
