The Future of Accountancy

Burgess COMMENTARY

Peter Burgess

Thanks ... but elapsed time is a bit of a shock when it is related to the rather small amount that I have accomplished. I did a lot better in the 1960s and 1970s and I really hope to figure out how to apply my training and decades of experience to something useful. 50 years later. I believe my current thinking about how accountancy can become the leading edge of accounting for and reporting on issues like social impact and environmental unsustainability could be a game changer ... but exactly how to do practically remains something of a challenge .. but I intend to keep at it. Again ... Thanks PeterB http://truevaluemetrics.org

The Lord Mayor of the City of London, Charles Bowman FCA, is visiting New York and we have planned an ACAUS reception with him on 1st June at the Cornell Club. Mr. Bowman, a senior partner at PwC, is an ICAEW member. His mayoral theme is the 'Business of Trust'. I plan to be there and if you want to register details are on our website www.acaus.org David MAY 11 Peter Burgess sent the following message at 9:23 AM View {:firstName} profile Peter Burgess Peter Burgess 9:23 AM Thanks ... I plan to be there. I worked with Brian Jenkins when I was at Coopers (C&L) in the early 60s as an articled clerk who subsequently became a partner and the Lord Mayor of London in the early 90s, President of the ICAEW, etc. Great to be able to stay in touch a little bit. PeterB David Powell sent the following message at 9:28 AM View {:firstName} profile David Powell David Powell 9:28 AM Hi Peter I was in London when Brian was Lord Mayor and was involved with the CLD float in the parade. We had the Pantomime crew man the float and walk alongside. I walked alongside. I had actually left CLD by then but was still involved with the pantomime as I'd come back to 'rescue it' in 1992 when the director quit and it was about to cancel. I took over directing (I had directed it previously as well as being assistant director, stage manager and lead actor in the first 5-6 years) and it's been going ever since :) David Peter Burgess sent the following message at 9:40 AM View {:firstName} profile Peter Burgess Peter Burgess 9:40 AM Did you know Peter Allan at all? I was at college with him ... and actually his fives partner in college sport, and then in the same cohort of articled clerks during our initial training. The last time I was in touch with him was around 1990 when he was grumbling about the profession of accountancy having become a 'business'! As you may or may not know, I dream about a new era in accountancy and accountability where bad actors in the global socio-enviro-economic system are called out and held to account. This cannot happen unless there are some very radical changes in the framing of how accountancy and reporting works, not to mention how success is defined!
