Cameron at 15:00, Dec 4: Hi, welcome to IBM. I am here to help answer any questions you may have about our product, services and offerings. Cameron at 15:00, Dec 4: How may I help you today? You at 15:00, Dec 4: in Scotland? You at 15:01, Dec 4: I am interested in thought leadership ... or lack of it? Cameron at 15:02, Dec 4: Hello. Are you currently in Scotland? You at 15:03, Dec 4: The IBM Institute for Business Value ... You at 15:03, Dec 4: No ... in the Poconos of Pennsylvania but I grew up in the UK Cameron at 15:03, Dec 4: Okay. May I have your name and company? You at 15:04, Dec 4: Peter Burgess You at 15:04, Dec 4: TrueValueMetrics.org Cameron at 15:05, Dec 4: Nice to meet you Peter. And you are interested in learning more about thought leadership, is that correct? You at 15:06, Dec 4: Yes ... but I am deeply concerned that most high level thought leadership is focused on GDP growth and corporate profit performance without paying enough attention to the related impacts on society and sustainability of the environment! You at 15:08, Dec 4: I graduated from Cambridge (engineering and economics) in 1961 and subsequently became a Chartered Accountant and later a very young CFO of a US company. You at 15:09, Dec 4: Fast forward, I have also done a lot of work with the World Bank, the UN and others on global issues and understand how poor several billion people are and how rich a very few are. This dysfunction is an existential threat to global peace. You at 15:10, Dec 4: There is also the problem of profits before planet ... and the crisis that is going to emerge when climate change really happens! Cameron at 15:11, Dec 4: I understand Peter. I can tell that you are very knowledgeable about the topic. Cameron at 15:11, Dec 4: We definitely have a lot of material that illustrates IBM's focus in this particular growth area. You at 15:13, Dec 4: Thanks for that ... my agenda is simple ... to design and deploy a better system of accountancy that is as rigorous about impact on society and impact on environment as conventional accounting is for impact on corporate profit performance. You at 15:16, Dec 4: With respect to IBM and most (if not all) of the organizations working in this space ... they really are still operating in the corporate dimension with only peripheral interest in society and the environment. The bottom line is still the profit bottom line of corporate enterprise. You at 15:17, Dec 4: Any chance to meet a human being at IBM in New York area that might have an interest in this subject and perhaps knows how cloud, AI, Watson, blockchain, IBM and my thinking might come together in one coherent framework? Cameron at 15:18, Dec 4: Yes. That is something that I can set up for you. You at 15:18, Dec 4: Fantastic ... what can I do to help? Cameron at 15:19, Dec 4: So just to clarify, you are looking to deploy a solution that encompasses your thinking with an IBM solution? You at 15:21, Dec 4: Yes ... but not really sure what 'business' architecture would be of interest to IBM and also be a fit for what I believe needs to get done! You at 15:24, Dec 4: Double entry accountancy is a technology that is 800 years old ... and open source! Various firms like PwC, EY, KPMG etc earn good money advising how to use it and tech companies build systems on top of the basic open source idea. In my view it is time conventional accountancy was updated to suit the 21st century!
