Thank you very much. We live in an exceptional world and this essay makes it very clear that this is not limited to Westerners and the Western world. I particularly liked the idea that anger at Chinese is really anger at oneself, but I also liked most everything else in the essay! Thank you again.

From Your Quora Digest Why are people so angry about China? Updated Thu Background: I am Canadian citizen from Indian background, soon I be here in a few years for 50 years. I have had worked in the Canadian dairy/food/flavor industry for about 30 years, and for the last 15 I am self employed. In addition I have two masters degrees in dairy and food sciences each, one from U of Punjab India and the other from U of Guelph. I was born in small town of Punjab region of India, moved to Canada in the early 70s, China being our neighbor to India, I was very interested to know about them. Our primary school teacher fired my brain teaching us our neighbor China is/was very advanced and cultured country. Since then I always had total fascination to know more about it. In Canada I was very fortunate to work with lot of nationalities and Chinese from all over the world including main land as friends, colleagues, class mates, reports, neighbors and now lot of clients/customers. I visited China and planning future several trips, including one coming in two weeks. So now I have given my background, I feel I may write a sensible piece on this question. “Why are people so angry about China?” I could finish this question in one line but I will not, and try my best to explain to reach to that line, which I think is the answer. Let us go from here. Early immigration to western world : This is known fact in early start of this last century, Westerns brought Asian including Chinese and Indians for straight labor. These people were extremely hard working, with minimum demands and sure they did not have Ph.D. in nuclear physics or M.D. in brain surgery. They were extremely determined people, hard working, honest and wanted to get out of the poverty. I have pictures of early migrants from India, and of course they were not standing next to Brad Pitt or Angelina Jollie, they are day to day people, they are not even Hindu, they are/were of other religions in India but are referred as Hindu at that time they did not even bother to identify even with proper nationality being Indian, they had basically no identity, as Indians in Canada but were referred as Hindus, Japanese and Chinese were not shown standing next Prime Minister of Canada either as I understand and records show they were referred as with kind of racial slurs. With time all Asians proved their worth, and earned proper respect with loyalty and hard work to this nation. So much so, The Rt. Hon. Adrienne Clarkson, was ex Governor General of Canada from Chinese descent. Source Several factors in China pushed the Chinese to seek work overseas. Here, immigrants to Canada are on board the sailing vessel, the Black Diamond, in Vancouver around 1889 Source “A need for workers in Canada’s growing economy pulled Chinese men to the new country. Notice the Union Jack flag fluttering behind the men in this photograph taken in Vancouver in 1899.” “Immigration from the Indian subcontinent to Canada began during the late 1800s. The majority was Sikhs from the Punjab region and most settled in British Columbia. They were often erroneously referred to by government authorities as Hindus. Some were discharged British soldiers; others were labourers who found work in the lumber, railway and mining industries.” “In 1891, an increase in the Chinese Head Tax caused a decline in Chinese immigration to Canada, so booking agents began encouraging immigration from India to sell tickets on trans-Pacific ships sailing between Hong Kong and British Columbia. Between 1904 and 1908, over 5,000 Indian men arrived in B.C., with approximately 3,000 of them continuing to the United States.” “This early immigration to Canada was met with much hostility in British Columbia. As a result of this, East Indian immigration to Canada decreased dramatically until the 1940s. Only after the First World War did Canada change its position on East Indian immigration and allowed the admission of women and children. However, other restrictions were applied over the years, such as the 'continuous voyage' regulation of 1908.” East Indian - Library and Archives Canada All Asians/including Chinese suffered very hostile atmosphere, and obviously press did not cast these immigrants in any positive light at all. Every thing in negative light is well documented in the archives of that time. By word of mouth it went from generation to generation of westerns. These kind of images are stuck in people’s mind, generation after generation of Westerns. “The internment of Japanese Americans in the United States during World War II was the forced relocation and incarceration in camps in the interior of the country of between 110,000 and 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry who had lived on the Pacific coast. Sixty-two percent of theinternees were United States citizens.” Internment of Japanese Americans - Wikipedia Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaInternment_of_Japanese_Americans Here is the history, of Asian immigrants to the west, and more or less permanent impression on the minds of westerns. Fast Forward: Japan rose from the ashes, like phoenix rises from the ashes, in fact most of the Asia started signs of life. India broke away the chains of slavery in 1947, China after suffering big set backs of as they call 100 years of Humiliation, is alive and well. “Why are people so angry about China?” Chinese huge rise can make anyone dizzy, and world is in total awe, here are some examples. OLD CHINA VERSUS NEW CHINA: New China, knock anyone socks out: Old China New China, enough to knock anyone’s socks out. My answer is people are not angry at China, they are angry at themselves, in Asia China is a big brother, and on the world scene soon it will be on the head table if it She is not already. China has crossed a major investment threshold that is going to change the entire world SamArora-Chinese-09.png'> Now, please check this out above data , this economic might is the root cause of all the things, negative and insults thrown at China, it has nothing to do with being Chinese, Japanese went through with it, world is not comfortable with other under dog changing the course of history. These are my personal thoughts. World is not angry with China, in fact they are angry with themselves, in fact so called first world thought they be there for ever at the top, they will be winning all wars with Asia, they be negotiating favorable treaties, bringing the raw materials from Asia, convert to finished products sell them back at multi-folds, gouging , and Chinese and Indians be slaves for ever, high paid unskilled jobs will stay there, nice hourly rates, benefits, retirement, vacations and so when started shifting to China, who will not hate China, be it in Asia, Europe, or America. Moral of the story is : they are not hating China, they are hating themselves at the mega, mind boggling success of China. Once I see following pictures of China/Chinese: Can you blame anyone , shear anger helpless, frustration at themselves, it has nothing to do with Chinese, at one time it was Japan. “Why are people so angry about China?” I believe they are not angry at China/or Chinese, they are simply angry at themselves. Can you blame them? I will not, just enjoy the ride. Asians are angry at themselves because, one of them has achieved so much, and rest of the world angry at themselves because an improvised, helpless, poor, and with mega problems, of vast country and huge population did it. I personally salute China/Chinese: I am determined to learn the good things, high achievements from China/Chinese, I am also determined not to comment on the issues I do not know much about it, such as political issues I am not qualified to make any comments due to lack my qualifications. To me success of any nation must be celebrated by all human race, because one way or the other it will benefit us and our coming generations. For example all the good invention science technological advances of USA, rest of the world is using it. Same way Chinese success story is victory of man kind and it should inspiration to all of us. China/Chinese is triumph of mankind against all the adverse conditions, opium addiction, foreign interference, famines, neighboring countries hostilities, it is called a period of “ 100 years of humiliation” and to rise from the ashes, is personal motivation for me, to a strong will to live, survive and thrive. Luxury car dealerships are a regular feature in Shanghai, Beijing, Hangzhou, and other big cities. Upscale restaurants in very fashionable district of Shanghai, where almost speaks fluent to good english. Up scale shopping area in Shanghai if Pearl tower and the Bund in Shanghai does not shock you nothing will Oversea Chinese, most of them did very well, from back breaking straight labor to become Governor General of Canada in later stages and following generations was not a over night success, The Rt. Hon. Adrienne Clarkson, from Chinese descent former Governor General of Canada, is a matter of pride and inspiration to all Asians especially to Chinese. Picture obtained through Google Search, from the internet. It may have been a long journey, but for coming generation is a hope, if you work hard, loyal and your heart is at right place, positive and fighting spirits with all adversity one day, it will happen here is a proof. In my view bright people like this lady, worked extremely hard, had very good education, and she must have concentrated on her task, rather going back to injustice done to her ancestors, she might have learned from it, and made herself extremely bright, intelligent and concentrated to out shine to reach that height. There is a lesson for all of us we cannot live in the past, we cannot keep wasting time on negative and haters, we must learn from it and move on, make ourselves a valuable asset to society, nation, and everyone around us. I soon be here in Canada for 50 years, I believe the golden principle is “ do respect and have respect” I only concentrated on the good things this great country had to offer, I came with 8 dollars in my pocket in this country, with hard work, positive attitude, respect for this land and opportunities it gave me, I and my family did extremely well not to the level of this great achievement of our ex Governor General, but I have not given up, as yet for my third generation of my grand kids 3 and 5. Think positive, respect and acknowledge the great success of the others is a key to your success also. To me Chinese success is success for all of us, as we all are beneficiary to American science, medical advances and computers/internet/air travel/ space victories/ and mega humanitarian help/helping poor nations/ world class Harvard and Stanford/ MIT/ John Hopkins/ melting pot of the world/ showed the world they promised to put man on the moon and they did it. To make a world a better place rather than hating each other we should come closer and recognize each others achievements and have synergistic effects, wasting money on bombs, killing, fear, paranoid, and waste of resources. Our leaders who are bright and have vision we must as individual help them to realize their dreams for better life for all of us. Picture taken from the internet, through Google search: obama and chinese president meeting In my view : Extremely strong positive relation between two great and extremely power nations USA and China, is very vital for the progress of world, both when put together can and will change the world a better place. Chinese hard work and American innovation, science, technology, humanitarian efforts and to make a world very nice place cannot go unrewarded. This relationship between two great nations US and China is not new, Nixon visited China in 1972, Our great leaders did not expected us to hate each other rather they visioned to progress, live in peace, prosperity and betterment of the humanity. It depends on us and future generations to carry the flag, with a very bright future free of hate, bombs, killing and mutual respect. These are/were the visionary, very accomplished individuals. Not a joke, we must carry the flag forward as human and not fight like animals. The world is becoming one place, pains in the USA will be felt around the world and suffering in China will felt in around the world too.
