A new study, Natural Capital Impacts in Agriculture: Supporting Better Business Decision-Making, commissioned by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to Trucost, reveals that our food system costs society USD 2.33 trillion every year, which is 1.5 times the production value of the commodities. The study includes the main crop and livestock commodities industrially produced globally, covering 80% of farming and upstream supply chain inputs. FAOSTAT data and literature reviews were used for the country- and commodity-specific calculation and monetization of impacts on greenhouse gas emissions, air, land and water pollutants, water consumption and land use change.
