When visiting the port with local MPs, Secretary of State for Transport Patrick McLoughlin MP climbed one of the world’s tallest quay cranes to view the location of the new berth. The location of the DP World London Gateway Port, which has 16 million consumers within 50 miles, enables imports to enter the UK closer to where the goods will be consumed. Bringing ships closer to key areas of consumption in the UK, such as London, Birmingham and Manchester, reduces the need to truck goods many miles inland, thereby removing unnecessary supply chain costs. In addition, rail services from the port now call at 11 destinations across the UK, offering a efficient alternative to road freight. The Berth Three announcement will enable the use of an additional 400 meters of quay length with a dredged depth of 17 meters alongside. DP World London Gateway port can easily handle the largest container ships and has developed innovative technology to ensure the port remains open in bad weather. Contracts have been awarded to VolkerFitzpatrick for civil and electrical works and four new quay cranes have been ordered from ZPMC. The third berth is planned to be operational in the second half of 2016. DP World London Gateway management showed the Transport Secretary the scale of the port as well as the adjacent London Gateway Logistics Park. DP World cice chairman Jamal Majid Bin-Thaniah said: “Since opening, DP World London Gateway has continued to attract more shipping line services and we remain committed to increasing speed and efficiency in supply chains.' DP World London Gateway CEO Simon Moore added: “As the port continues to win new business, we are now announcing Berth Three in-line with our customers’ needs and we are delighted the Transport Secretary was able to visit the port and see for himself the facilities and infrastructure we have created to reduce supply chain costs.”

DP World opens logistics hub at London Gateway by ASC Staff on Jul 21, 2015 DP World London Gateway has marked the official opening of the first distribution centre at what is set to become the largest logistics hub in the country. DP World chairman, Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, was joined by parliamentary under-secretary of state for transport Robert Goodwill to formalise the opening of the centre during a ribbon cutting ceremony. The first phase of this high tech unit, which comprises 16,800m² (180,000 sq ft) of distribution and logistics space and 2,400m² (25,000 sq ft) of office space, has been finished to BREEAM “very good” standard, the world's foremost environmental assessment method and rating system for buildings. Based on market demand, DP World is now planning to increase the size of the centre to 36,000m² (380,000 sq ft). The centre is being operated in partnership with DP World by Import Services Limited, a leading UK logistics services provider, offering a variety of activities on a pay-as-you-go basis. “I am delighted to have been able to open the London Gateway Logistics Centre, which is the next step in this ground-breaking development on the north-bank of the River Thames which is breath-taking in its size, scale and attention to detail,” said Goodwill. “DP World London Gateway is an excellent example of the benefits inward investment brings to UK infrastructure and the economy,” he added. “Any project that gives the country an edge, whether it be generating supply chain efficiency or leading the way in environmental sustainability, should be commended.” Bin Sulayem added: “Our new DP World London Gateway Logistics Centre is the next landmark in this unique development for the UK. DP World London Gateway is transforming UK supply chains and this new logistics hub has been constructed to the highest quality and environmental standards.” “It is the perfect example of how retailers and cargo owners can achieve cost savings by positioning themselves strategically, here, in the right location for trade,” he added. The DP World London Gateway Logistics Park is located adjacent to the UK’s newest deep-sea terminal, with its excellent location, on the door-step of the largest consumer market in Western Europe. “Our next building, in joint venture with Prologis, is progressing well and we expect it to be ready in September,” Bin Sulayem confirmed. John Eynon, managing director, Import Services Limited, said: “In just two months of operations at the new London Gateway Logistics Centre, the strong demand for our services means we are already approaching capacity of phase one and now seeking to accelerate development of additional warehousing space at London Gateway.” The London Gateway container port combines new technology to bring previously unseen reliability and efficiency to supply chains by safely operating non-stop through adverse weather conditions.

UPS’s hub will also provide distribution solutions to other logistics park occupiers. This combination of world class services will be a unique offering for the UK and Europe.” The facility, expected to be completed in the summer of 2017, will act as a UK hub and distribution centre for the local area as well as a key gateway to UPS’s global transportation network. Once completed, the facility will be able to process approximately 30,000 packages per hour, with room for further expansion
