Good night. Thank you for chatting up. [4/10/2015 8:15:33 PM] Claudia Freed: Peter...I had an idea. Why not see if we can find a 'micro nation' to test the TrueValue Metrics approach? You surely know a small country willing to test your ideas. This could be in addition to getting a large corporation try the concept. Just a thought. [4/10/2015 8:23:00 PM] Claudia Freed: Peter! Another idea: it would be helpful to have a view on 'how budgets should be set' for this type of accounting. I am sure you've already thought about this. However, I am reading an article by Jack Miles titled: 'Good problem to have: What to do with money procurement saves.' Very interesting. I don't agree with most of it but yes about the budget. [4/29/2015 1:12:12 PM] Peter Burgess: I am curious ... are there any American born people in your (our) circles that are doing important things? My evening on Monday featured Rezwan Rezani who doesn't sound like she comes from Wisconsin and nor does Kiljoong! [4/29/2015 1:13:23 PM] Claudia Freed: LOLOLOOOOO!!! [4/29/2015 1:14:49 PM] Claudia Freed: BTW -- I am $3900 away from a $3900 opportunity but somehow I have the feeling that I will get there! Chris opened the door for me to attend Harvard Sustainability Executive Leadership program in July. I am working on it... [4/29/2015 1:15:48 PM] Peter Burgess: I also had a fascinating time on Saturday with a friend from Zambia. He also invited a young lady named Maria Claudine MUKAMABANO (www.whydoiexist.org) who has a history, a present and I would argue a future! Check it out! [4/29/2015 1:18:06 PM] Claudia Freed: Claudia...Claudine maybe we are related!!! I just sawr her gorgeous pic...I guess we are not first cousins but rather sisters in spirit!! WOW!! so inspiring!!! Where did you meet her?? [4/29/2015 1:19:00 PM] Peter Burgess: MIT Sloan has a sustainable training initiative as well ... see this webinar: http://www.sustainablebrands.com/solutionproviders/mit_sloan_school_management [4/29/2015 1:20:30 PM] Peter Burgess: In the end the MIT/SB webinar is about selling the MIT course, and there is nothing at all to be learned about how to do the numbers. Deep down, I don't think they know how to do it any more than I do! [4/29/2015 1:24:48 PM] Claudia Freed: I probably have to agree and your 'compassionate skeptcisim' is a fantastic sample of the 'gentle arm twisting' I will have to do with my Board when they ask me 'why can't you do it with youtube?' For EAL, to be associated with a prestigious entity has the 'halo' effect we need to move to the front of the pack. Hate to be so competitive but that's what's required. It's really more about networking and access to these big corporations than about the 'true knowledge' [4/29/2015 1:25:16 PM] Peter Burgess: I know Spencer Chiimbwe for several years since when he first came to the USA. We collaborated on something called the New York Center for Conflict Resolution. He is now trying to pay the rent doing paid work, and is currently working in political Albany. The event was a Visitors' day at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Nyack where he lives with his family. I had no idea about Claudine's history, though I was in Burundi, Uganda and Rwanda immediately before the Tutsi genocide. Did you see the YouTube of her singing at the UN about 6 years ago? Next Saturday she is talkiing at the President's prayer breakfast at the White House! [4/29/2015 1:29:16 PM] Peter Burgess: Claudine asked me about a course she wants to do at a UK university? I told her that the value might be in a piece of paper ... the certificate ... but the knowledge increment would be low. That was before I had much knowledge of her story. You are so right about the 'halo' effect and also the connections / door opening capacity of the 'name' schools. Key point: TBL was a nice idea BUT we need a single focus on how to measure sustainability. Here is the link: http://isites.harvard.edu/fs/docs/icb.topic747719.files/Supplemental%20Reading%20Folder/ECOSSingleBottomLineSustainability.pdf [6/20/2015 8:14:32 PM] Peter Burgess: Thanks for the link ... I have been working on water. I have made progress but not finished ... it is better than the version is is replacing. ... OOPS this was written about 6.40 but I never pressed the return. I got side tracked because I included a super large image in one of my slidesets and that was a potential issue ... now somewhat fixed! [6/20/2015 8:25:45 PM] Peter Burgess: This has some big images ... but towards the last slides some new graphics http://www.slideshare.net/PeterBurgess2/mdia-p305tvdwater150420-47780827 [6/21/2015 10:27:06 AM] Claudia Freed: Peter, first of all Happy Father's Day. I clicked through the slides and like the way you are using images to make your point about water. You can 'trim' the presentation by deleting the slides that 'announce' the upcoming slide. You don't need to transition as hopefully the reader is engaged and knows what is coming next. I also think you need to clarify the point about the lack of a logistics system for water vs. oil and gas. I agree. However, what about water bills? Isn't that a measurement of water use? Or are you talking about a lack of water system in underdeveloped places? Not sure what you mean. I like your 'call for collaboration' slide. However, I think we need to rewrite it. Otherwise, the way I read it it sounds you are asking for money to invest in your project. Sorry, English is not my first language and occassionally gets me all confused! [6/21/2015 10:30:37 AM] Peter Burgess: Thanks ... you are surprisingly complimentary ... and yes still a lot of work to do to really clean it up. The big missing piece is the actual calculations starting off the the 'accounts' ... but that is getting closer. Here is the list of Action Steps: Practical Steps Towards a Sustainable Society. 1) Raise Public Awareness, 2) Promote Education, 3) Increase Government and Business Investment, 4) Conserve Resources and Eliminate Waste, and 5) Re-evaluate Values. SOURCE: www.sustainabilitydegrees.com Raise Public Awareness Individuals cannot make sustainable choices unless they know what those choices are, and countries will not take direct action to promote sustainable practices unless they receive substantial pressure from citizens. Websites, speeches, movements and rallies all contribute to raising public awareness. Promote Education Promoting free and fair access to a quality education for all children, both girls and boys, produces a number of positive outcomes. It increases children’s level of understanding about the environment; it empowers them to make personal choices about family size and lifestyle; and, it provides the world with informed and productive citizens. Increase Government and Business Investment New technologies and infrastructures, built using environmentally sound practices, have the potential to transform modern society. But, this is only possible if governments and businesses are willing to invest much-needed capital in their development. Conserve Resources and Eliminate Waste Like it or not, the earth’s resources are finite. Large-scale efforts to conserve energy and water will have an impact, but personal choices are just as important. The more steps we take to eliminate waste and needless consumption, the better off future generations will be. Re-evaluate Values Is the current culture of disposable consumerism, fossil fuel dependency and heavy automobile use what we hope to pass on to our children? Do we wish to overcome inequalities in education, standards of living and economic opportunity? Then our personal values, as well as our actions, must change. Thoughts? http://www.jstor.org/stable/247520?seq=1#page_thumbnails_tab_contents [7/1/2015 12:04:27 PM] Peter Burgess: The article may well be very dense (it is about accountancy which is not a sexy subject) though the title itself sounds interesting ... my guess would be that we will be disappointed. I think I prefer, as your suggested, that a good simple achronym (SEES) etc, would dovetail the 'accounting standards' culture of rules and regs. So rather than a long name, a short set of letters could work. Double Plus Accounting? They will think we are in Chicago where we say, vote early, vote often (that's in reference to go vote as many times as yuo can get in line!) An international contact in Vietnam took offense to my work! (this was in the 1990s) ... which reminds me I must reactivate my community workbook material ... [7/1/2015 2:39:23 PM] Claudia Freed: Good point. Also important to research TM and R names. [7/1/2015 2:41:28 PM] Claudia Freed: Positive Impact Accounting? I know..I am driving you nuts by now. Sorry! I am just so focused on this bit that I cannot let go! [7/1/2015 2:42:05 PM] Peter Burgess: When you have time you might want to look at CSRhub ... a quite serious initiative about the state of CSR in thousands of companies. I met the CEO a couple of years back and ought to get back with him ... maybe after you have conquered Harvard [7/1/2015 2:44:56 PM] Peter Burgess: The name issue is important ... 'branding' is a serious business and what is going to work is not always obvious [7/1/2015 2:45:10 PM] Claudia Freed: agreed [7/1/2015 2:50:59 PM] Claudia Freed: Peter, you know what makes Multi-Dimensional Impact Accounting so hard for me is the use of Multi-Dimensional as a hyphenated word. If you just called it Multidimesional Imapct Accounting or MIA that makes it easier to say but then you need to deal with the MIA (missing in action jokes that are sure to follow!) Grrrr!
