For years people called him 'looney', due to his sustainable views, especially in the food production area. I am happy to see all that work getting recognized worldwide and very much validated. He has been way ahead of the curve on a whole lot of critical issues going way back to the sixties. In my view, the media have never done their homework. He has had a deep concern for social issues, for livable architecture, for wildlife and the environment, for business behavior ... and the list goes on. He has made a huge difference, but all very very quietly. He also has a very deep sense of humor. As I say ... one of my favorite people. Having said that, while I am glad that the Prince is engaged with accounting and sustainability with initiatives like the Integrated Reporting of IIRC and The Prince's Accounting for Sustainability Project, I sense that the people around him are the accounting establishment that will have a great difficulty in 'thinking outside the box'. My understanding of these various initiatives is that the expectation is that 'tweeking' the accounting system and reporting about a corporate organization is going to result in substantial change towards sustainability ... and I don't think the evidence shows this will work. Something more radical is needed so that the data being analyzed reflects multiple perspectives ... multiple dimensions. People, not organizations, should be at the center of the analysis of progress and performance. Organizations may be an important part of good performance, but not without a huge rethink about their priorities and behaviors. Prince Charles has got a conversation started. Hopefully it will be able to do something measurably significant.
