Dear Samuel

Thank you for contacting me. As you may have noticed, I am of the view that there are many important things that need to be done that cannot and should not make a profit ... but should get funding and should be done.

I am trying to develop a system of accounting that is a rigorous as money profit accounting, but applies to impact on people and planet as well.

The core of TrueValueMetrics is the economic activity. An economic activity consumes resources and produces goods or services. It is located in a place. It is implemented by an organization. It is financed by an organization. It employs people and serves people. It is associated with products that it buys and it sells.

A big organization may have hundreds of economic activities going on in many different places. Making big organizations accountable is difficult, and often they take advantage of this to the detriment of society. An economic activity in a place is much more accountable.

So far there is not a common agreement on how to quantify value. In my view value must be quantified in order for it to be managed effectively. When value is quantified, it often makes sense for money to be invested. Without the quantification, it is difficult to quantify what the money is actually doing.

Please tell me more about what you are doing, and where you are doing it. I don't know DRC very well, though I crossed into Zaire from South Sudan long ago when I was working with UNDP/UNHCR in connection with refugees from Uganda.
