Rethinking Purpose
The core purpose of economic activity is to provide the goods and services needed by people for them to have a reasonable quality of life. The idea that the purpose of the economy is to generate: (1) the most money profit for business and investors; (2) the maximum of stock price rise for investors; and (3) to have strong GDP growth so that business profit is easier ... is not something that makes much sense. A better set of metrics about the state, progress and performance of society would be measurements about impact on the 4Ps: people, place (community), planet, and profit. Almost all economic performance is measured using profit from the perspective of the organization. Equally important is for the measures to incorporate impact on people, place and planet. This is what TrueValueMetrics has set out to do. This requires a quantification of value. Value is subjective, but is vitally important., and it can be done. In TrueValueMetrics it is done using standard values. A step towards metrics reform is to start to rethink the purpose of everything. If economic resources are being used ... what is the purpose? Please help by submitting your thoughts about the purpose of the economic activities you see. | |||||||||
