I also developed and coordinated the Eco-Pesa (Ecological Money) programme. In which a complementary currency was developed to benefit the environment and economy of Kongowea, a (slum) district of Mombasa Kenya. The currency acts as a local currency that can be exchanged for local goods and services and redeemed for Kenyan Shillings. Math Science Vounteer Peace Corps November 2008 – September 2009 (11 months) Description of Service Math/Science Volunteer 2008-2009 Kenya After a competitive application process, stressing applicant skills, adaptability and cross cultural understanding Mr. William Oliver Ruddick was invited into Peace Corps service. He was assigned to serve in Kenya as a Math/Science teacher in the Education sector. Mr. William Oliver Ruddick entered into training on November 12, 2008, participating in an intensive ten-week training program in Kitui, Kenya. Language training in Kiswahili consisted of 150 hours. Other training included: 72 hours cross cultural, 105 hours technical, 24 hours medical, 24 hours safety and security, 24 hours field-based training and development, and 10 hours Peace Corps policy and administration. After successfully completing training, Mr. Ruddick was sworn in as a Volunteer on January 8, 2009. He was assigned to Ribe Boys Secondary School under the supervision of the Ministry of Education. Mr. Ruddick terminated his service on September 11, 2009. In addition to teaching science Mr. Ruddick started and revived several clubs at his school: debate, environmental and science. He helped his students in math and science competitions. He designed and held a workshop on the design of greenhouses. His environmental club students started a tree nursery. He collaborated with the government, radio stations, corporations, community based organizations and many individuals. He also helped design and construct the first greenhouse on the south coast of Kenya with Eco Ethics International. Mr. Ruddick worked with a group of Kenyan peer youth educators (PYEs) from the Mombasa Youth Counseling Center, focusing on the street children of Mombasa. He designed a forum for street children to talk about their lives, problems and dreams. He also started MotoMoto Circus, a program run by and targeting street children, teaching life skills and vocational training through circus arts.
