Burgess COMMENTARY
Dear MargaretI like your reference to being 'happy'. I argue that with the amazing progress over the past 50 years in science and technology, we should be very optimistic about the future, but sadly this is not happening. Too many powerful people see more and more money as the goal ... and this just does not deliver happiness nor does it result in security and stability.
I would like to help ... but I need to be honest. I was born in 1940 ... you can do the math ... so I am not young and there are limits to what I can do. Nevertheless, I am doing my best to take what I have done over the last 50 years or so and use this to build a framework of metrics that will serve the for-profit business corporation, the not-for-profit organization and the community at large.
Business decisions that make more and more profit also have impact that translates into more and more poverty for some stakeholders and more and more damage to the environment and the future. Money profit metrics and stock market prices and GDP growth are all variants of metrics that will result in worse and worse outcomes for society ... and in my view these metrics have to be replaced or seriously reformed.
As I said, I would like to help. Now the question is how?
