In an affluant surplus economy what we want helps to define what it is that makes for better quality of life ... and betterment of quality of life is the core purpose of all economic activity.

What we 'want' has been trivialized in modern business practice in large part by advertising that encourages the buying of more and more 'stuff'. much of which is totally superfluous to meaningful improvement in quality of life, but it does add to the consumption component of that dangerous economic metric, GDP.
