GLOBAL TEMPERATURE TREND FOR ABOUT 22,000 YEARS
This 22,000 year timeline shows that there has been a slow warming of the planet over most of this time. However, what has happened in the last 200 years has never happened before and the change since the beginning of the industrial revolution in the last 200 years is unique.

Scientists are very confident that a massive change is underway, but they are less sure about the way the changes will manifest. One of the most likely outcomes is that there will be more and more unpredictable extreme weather events in large part because of the massive increase in the total energy now embedded in the oceans.
GLOBAL TEMPERATURE TREND FOR THE LAST 1000 YEARS
The temperature during the last 200 years is unprecedented both in absolute terms and the speed of the temperature change. What this is going to mean for the behavior of the climate system is unclear. What is clear, however, is that there are going to be changes like we have never seen before.
