Background
The conventional wisdom in some circles is that the purpose of business is to make profit, and if a business makes profit, then there will be an optimization of the economy and the maximum of benefit for society. This is the basic premise of the Adam Smith argument for a laissez faire market economy, and it has worked better for most of the last three hundred years than the alternatives.
The modern version of this argument is that business has to optimize its performance relative to the interest of the owners … the stockholders. Some executives have argued that to do anything else is a breach of trust and executives could be held accountable in law for their actions.
This idea has been challenged. Whether or not the law requires optimization of business for the benefit of stockholders, there are initiatives to make it clear that the 'purpose' of the business is to make a contribution to society using the resources of the business. One such initiative in the United States is the B Corp movement, which specifically has articles in the Bye Laws to ensure that social benefit is a legitimate goal of the business.
Whether or not there is a problem in law to do things that are valuable for society … for people and planet … the metrics of state, progress and performance may be structured so that it is possible to see what is going on and understand the implications.

Background
The conventional wisdom in recent times is that the purpose of business is to make profit, and management's job is to make as much profit as possible. This is what business schools have been teaching for many geberations of students.
There is an assumption that by optimizing the performance of business, then there will be an optimization of the economy and the maximum of benefit for society.
This idea goes back to the laissez faire market economy described by Adam Smith over 200 years ago, but does not stand up in the very different economic landscaped of the 21st century. Certainly capitalism and the free market has worked better than communism, for example, but this does not mean that these ideas are the best possible ones for the 21st century.
What is the purpose of Business?
Some say the purpose of business is to make a profit, in other words the managers of a business should optimize business performance relative to the interest of the owners … the stockholders. Some lawyers have argued that to do anything else is a breach of trust and executives could be held accountable in law shouold they do anything else.
This idea has been challenged. Whether or not the law requires optimization of business for the benefit of stockholders, there are initiatives to make it clear that the 'purpose' of the business is to make a contribution to society using the resources of the business. One such initiative (in the United States and elsewhere) is the B Corp movement, which specifically has articles in the Bye Laws to ensure that social benefit is a legitimate goal of the business.
The idea that profit is the only purpose of a business explains some of the dysfunction of the enviro-socio-economic system. The purpose of economic activity ... most often a business ... is, at its core, to enable people to improve and maintain a better quality of life. Business should be doing things that are valuable for society … and for people and planet. Providing a living for the owner is part of this, but not eveything.
The metrics for business should show state, progress and performance in a way so that it is possible to see what is going on and understand the implications.
