WHAT FUTURE FOR BREXIT? The Federal Trust: The US Midterms, Brexit and the US-UK Special Relationship Original article: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arlDVBq5S9A Peter Burgess COMMENTARY I am making this note in September 2023, about a year after the original video was circulated. I have been of the opinion that Brexit was a bad idea from the 'get-go', but I am worried that it will be even worse for the 'Brits' than I thought prior to the infamous Brexit referendum. Some of the material that I have been seeing recently highlights the manner in which the 'Brexiteers' promoted the idea in one way in the 'run-up' to the referendum and how they actually behaved when the referendum was 'won' and they went about implementing the referendum decision. Bluntly put ... I am disgusted! But it may be even worse. There are a lot of countries around the world where the 'popular' narrative is that European involvement with their country during the 'colonial' era was a bad thing ... and while there certainly were aspects of the colonial era that were awful, there were many things that were better than what was the previous norm. My expectation is that when it comes to international trade and global relations, there will be a lot of countries that will 'dump' their relationship with Britain now that it is un-connected with the European Union. Frankly, I have been amazed at the amount of global economic activity that has flowed via the UK into Europe, all of which is in the process of ending. I grew up in England ... born in 1940 ... and have some memory of the industrial importance of the country in the early post-war years. It was dirty, but it was an important part of British prosperity and essentially paid for winning the war against Nazis and fascism. I have some memory of misinformation that flowed in the 1940s and 1950s ... and from my parents what flowed in the 1930s. Misinformation in the present time is bigger and faster than ever before ... and even more dangerous. Caveat! Peter Burgess | ||
The US Midterms, Brexit and the US-UK Special Relationship
The Federal Trust Nov 11, 2022 5.89K subscribers ... 27,551 views ... 839 likes In this new Federal Trust video, John Stevens and Brendan Donnelly discuss the impact of American politics on Brexit, both historically and in the future. The present Democratic administration is well-disposed to the EU and unenthusiastic about Brexit. But no future Republican administration is likely to support the UK in any controversy with the EU either. The hopes pinned by many supporters of Brexit in the American connection have been and will be disappointed. SPEAKER:
