JAMAICA'S VIOLENCE The Agenda with Steve Paikin ... The Story Behind Jamaica's Violence ... from 2016 Original article: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otarGqmZ6jM Peter Burgess COMMENTARY I have family connections with Jamaica, and, of course, I am British and grew up with a very British view of history and geography ... not to mention that I played cricket as do the Jamaicans. As I understand it, violence in Jamaica did not involve guns until the early 1970s when Manley was Prime Minister. It has been alleged that the US CIA had a role in enabling gun trafficking and violence because they did not approve of the left-leaning policies of the county under Manley. I have heard this from several people of Jamaican origin, but not seen it myself in the American media. It sounds plausible given the CIA involvement in other destabilisation activities in Central America around the same time. In the early 1970s I worked for Continental Seafoods Inc. (I was their CFO) and visited Nicaragua and El Salvador where we had subsidiaries which operated fishing trawlers and shore facilities n the Pacific coast. At this time both these countries were relatively peaceful, but this changed completely later in the decade for reasons I do not completely understand. It has been reported that the USA was involved significantly in the destabilization of these countries at this time, though I don't know the details. Peter Burgess | ||

From the slum neighbourhoods of Kingston to the political divisiveness around Bob Marley's 'Smile Jamaica' concert and the assassination attempt against him during the 1970s, the novel uses a multitude of voices to tell the story of the hostility that gripped the island nation from the Cold War to the drug wars of the 1980s and 1990s.
