Lawrence O'Donnell: ‘The Texas Coverup Is Collapsing’ Original article: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_4iIvFsmy4 Peter Burgess COMMENTARY I am not a hunter, but I understand that there are people who like hunting as a sport and I also see the value of wild animal population control. I don't understand the idea that in a civilized society there is a need for me and everyone to carry a firearm in order to have law and order. To me, this makes no sense, and the data support my point of view. Back in 1967, I had a close encounter with gun violence. My wife and I lived in Beaumont, Texas for several months. We were new in the USA and only had a relatively few friends ... but my wife was friendly with another young couple. The husband worked late, and the wife had a firearm in the house. One night she thought an intruder was coming into the house, and shot him dead. It was in fact her husband. It is the only close encounter I have had ... but it was deadly. In the UK, where I grew up, the police do not carry firearms during their normal duty. More important, most people do not carry guns either, including those committing crimes. There is a systemic reason for this. Wher a crime committed by an unarmed gang will likely be punished by a jail time of 15 months. a crime committed where there is a firearm will get 15 years of jail time. Gang leaders do not want this risk and guns are rarely present while a crime is being committed. If there is an active shooter situation in the UK, unarmed police can call in a very very competent SWOT team who will arrive in minutes and neutralise the shooter almost instantly. These are superbly trained police officers. many of who have training with the UK special forces prior to their work with the police. The UK does not have much gun violence. The USA has an epidemic ... a crisis ... of gun violence, and political inaction for decades. This is massive governance failure in the USA which is doing untold damage to the reputation of US in most international circles. Peter Burgess | ||
