I worked and did consultancy work in West Africa during the 1970s and 1980s ... and know Sierra Leone and Liberia very well. The combination of civil war and Ebola and a variety of other issues, has pushed these countries backwards a very long way. It is convenient to blame African leadership, but rich countries have studiously avoided getting involved escept when they have little or no other option. My work in the area was fairly constructive, but the 'development establishment' was not very happy with my recommendations. Part of my training was in accountancy ... and I know something about following the money, and this resulted in me getting to know quite a lot about corruption. It has been fashionable for decades to blame the people asking for money, but the role of the people paying the money is just as bad ... and that group of people have power, are from rich countries and companies, and should know better.
