JOURNALIST KILLED IN ISRAEL DemocracyNow ... Palestinian American Reporter Shireen Abu Akleh Killed in Israeli Raid in Jenin Original article: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tBPnEVDDY8 Burgess COMMENTARY I am an outspoken critic of the weakness of the media, but from time to time I am reminded that there are amazing journalists that risk their lives to do their job, and do a good job, no matter what. Shireen Abu Akleh, a veteran Palestinian American journalist working for Al Jazeera was one such reporter. I am saddened by her killing and motivated very much to do what I can so that this sort of thing does not happen. Many years ago I was working in West Africa, and visited a UN project that supported local journalists in Africa. The project was based in Dakar in Senegal. I remember talking to jurnalists who would risk their lives writing up important stories about things like corruption and military atrocities, but none of this would get into the media in the rich countries. Rather, the rich country media would gravitate to titulating scandal about people like Winnie Mandella which had namne recognition but was unimportant in the bigger scheme of things. While many in the rich countries of Europe and America do not like AlJazeera, I have been impressed at their reporing over many years. I am not comfortable with the 'ownership' of AlJazeera, but then, I am not comfortable with the 'ownership' of the Washington Post either. Shireen Abu Akleh was a credit to her profession. She will be missed. Peter Burgess | ||

May 11, 2022 13,708 views Democracy Now! ... 1.05M subscribers Israeli forces have shot and killed Shireen Abu Akleh, a veteran Palestinian American journalist working for Al Jazeera, as she covered an Israeli army raid on the Jenin refugee camp early Wednesday morning. Video released by Al Jazeera shows Abu Akleh was wearing a press uniform when she was shot in the head by what the network says was a single round fired by an Israeli sniper. 'She gave voice to the struggles of Palestinians over a career spanning nearly three decades,' says journalist Dalia Hatuqa, remembering her friend and colleague. 'Her killing is not an isolated incident. This has been happening for a long time: Israeli attacks against media workers, especially Palestinians, and the relative impunity under which they operate.' #DemocracyNow Democracy Now! is an independent global news hour that airs on nearly 1,400 TV and radio stations Monday through Friday.
