ABC Four Corners ... The world's biggest meat company is built on corruption and it's growing in Australia

Burgess COMMENTARY
I had academic training in economics at Cambridge in my youth in and around 1960. At that time there was a very robust push back on the monopoly power of very big corporate organizations. This was in the UK, but similar concern over monopoly power was active in Europe and in North America.
This started to change in the 1960s and was pretty much totally defunct by the early '80s when Margaret Thatcher became the UK Prime Minister and Ronald Reagan became the President of the USA.
I became a very young corporate CFO in the 1970s in the USA, and all of our senior management were very careful about doing anything that would attract the attention of the 'Monopoly Commission'. There was a reason for this. Some of them had worked for GE where several senior managers had been sent to jail because of 'anti-trust' issues at their company. Fast forward through the past 40 years or more and most every company seems to do all in its corporate power to achieve massive scale and monopoly power.

ABC is an Australian public broadcast service.

You may not have heard of them, but JBS is the biggest meat company in the world. It controls a lot of the food you buy in the supermarket including beef, pork, lamb and salmon. You'll even find their meat between your burger buns at McDonald's.

But despite its size and reach, JBS is a company built on corruption and bribery; tainted by charges and accusations of malpractice and environmental crimes.

While some foreign governments are holding the company to account, Australian politicians have given JBS the green light to grow.
