Burgess COMMENTARY
I was told when I was a student at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge that my room was on the same staircase where Oliver Cromwell had been during his student days. I also knew that Oliver Cromwell did not attend the University for a full three years. I was on 'A' staircase which is not visible in the picture which is of Hall Court.
When I was at Sidney ... 1958 - 1961 ... the College was carrying out a number of 'digs' looking for buried artifacts. The College was built on land that had been owned by Trinity College and used as a cemetary. There was talk that some of the remains were of powerful people from the Cromwell saga. The talk has not yet been verified.
I am a 'Burgess' ... and there is reference in this video (at around 14:10) to Oliver Cromwell's father being a Burgess in his home town of Huntingdon. It is rare for there to be reference to a Burgess which had a quite important role in the communities of the time.

What was the family background to Oliver Cromwell? Was he related to Thomas Cromwell, Henry VIII's chief minister? Should he really be called Oliver Williams rather than Cromwell? Was Cromwell abducted by a monkey as a baby? These and other questions are answered in this video by the Cromwell Museum's Curator, Stuart Orme, which looks at the Cromwell family.
