When I was about 11 years old, two of my cousins and myself were gifted a 1907 Levis motor bike that had not worked for several decades. We pulled it apart and put it together and made it work. It was belt drive with bead edged tyres and all the rubber was ancient and rotten. We drove this ancient bike round and round a small dirt track that went round our house in Okehamption, in the process ruining the bike, but havbing a huge amount of fun. A few years later when I was about 17, I had the opportunity to ride a Vincent Black Shadow bike. This was a 1000 cc two cylinder V. It had a kick start and not easy to get started. When the engine backfired, the kick start would rocket you skywards. This machine scared me to death ... and I don't think I have been on a motor-bike since then!!!!!! The modern Indian is a powerful bike and it is interesting how the engine has been designed to get a lot of power by optimized design of the combustion process. Peter Burgess | ||
