FRUSTRATION WITH MODERN BILLING PRACTICES

Frustration with modern digital billing practices and corporate website design

Burgess COMMENTARY

Peter Burgess
I am 82 years old and no longer a 'digital native' though I worked during my career on a lot of computerized accounting systems going back to the early mainframes. Years ago, as a corporate accountant / CFO I helped design account statements that were as easy to understand as possible, giving useful information as clearly as possible. This contrasts with modern websites which seem to be doing their best to confuse and frustrate ... and yours is no exception. I don't know why modern websites cannot include a simple account statement that includes all the debits and all the credits together with date the transaction posts, some simple description of the charges, and a running balance. Maybe there needs to be 2 balance columns, one for the amount due next payment and one for the balance due through the end of a multi-period funding program. I get the impression that it is the lawyers more than it is the accountants that oversee website information ... or perhaps someone at a high level that has given the guidance that the customer should be confused to the maximum extent possible. In any event ... I am old, frustrated and determined not to give in to the prevailing level of corporate indifference. Sincerely Peter Burgess
