TRUCKS The Story of the British Lorry - Documentary Archive Footage - Road Transport Wagons Haulage Original article: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dl19maaRs4 Burgess COMMENTARY My maternal grandparents lived in Lancashire not far from Leyland, the town where the Leyland lorry and bus factory was located. When I was at university I toured the Leyland factory and spent a few days in their apprentice training center courtesy of one of my cousins. This was in the late 1950s a long time before digital automation. I recall the importance of the tool crib in achieving the right quality in everything that was produced. Leyland manufacturing tolerances were significantly higher than what was commonplace in car production at the time. The British lorry and bus served a global market before WWII and immediately after the end of the war, but they lost competitive advasntage internationally in the 50s and 60s in part because the givernment road rules in the UK limited the speed of commercial vehicles to under 30 miles per hour ... a rule that was disappearing elsewhere in the world. British vehicle no longer were the best buy and other suppliers rapidly nations filled the void. There was also a period of time in Britain when the ordinary worker became very upset ... angry ... and was very uncooperative in almost anything that involved change.
