A ZanaAfrica program beneficiary...

Sunday is International Day of the Girl. Give now to support Mercy with the tools she needs to thrive.

Meet Mercy. She is a bright 13-year old girl who loves reading, soccer, and playing with her friends. She is one of the top students in her class and dreams of becoming a lawyer one day—though no one in her family has ever finished secondary school.

Sadly, for Mercy, completing her education and fulfilling her dreams is not at all guaranteed. Because for Mercy, and for millions of girls across Kenya, at puberty, her world has begun to narrow, while boy’s worlds begin to widen. Rather than adolescence being a moment of hope and expansion, it is a time when girls’ opportunities begin to contract, and gender inequalities begin to show up.

Today, across Kenya:
  • 1 in 4 girls drops out of school by the time she reaches puberty
  • 1 in 5 teenage girls is pregnant or has begun childbearing
  • Since schools closed in March there have been 5,000 cases of rape reported, and in 70% of cases, the victims are under 17 years old
Since 2007, ZanaAfrica has confronted these challenges by supporting girls with the tools they need to safely navigate puberty and step into their potential. By delivering our proven intervention of sanitary pads delivered with rights-based health education through a curriculum, magazine, and mentors, we’re confronting these inequalities head on.

With no real end in sight to Covid-19—the impacts of which disproportionately impact girls and women—the need for our work has never been more apparent. Access to pads, health education, and safe spaces are critical for girls to thrive. With your ongoing support, ZanaAfrica will ensure that Mercy and so many girls like her, can be safe, and informed, and ready to take on the world.

Through our Covid Response program and our direct school-based work, which will resume once schools reopen later this month, we can equip Mercy with the tools she needs to understand her body and rights, to believe in her inherent capabilities, and to harness her voice to direct the life she desires.

In celebration of International Day of the Girl (IDG) on Sunday October 11, we hope you will continue your journey with us, as we walk alongside girls and expand our programs across Kenya (more on that soon!).

Thank you for your generosity, your advocacy, and for believing in the power and potential of girls! Happy IDG!
