Presents the

National Sustainable Materials Management Summit
A policy summit addressing the future management of discarded materials through redesign, reuse, recycling and composting
University of Maryland
May 12-13, 2015

About the Summit

The National Recycling Coalition, Inc. (NRC), in partnership with the Syracuse University Center for Sustainable Community Solution and University of Maryland Environmental Finance Center, is organizing a one and a half day Sustainable Materials Management (SMM) Summit focused on the sustainable management of discarded materials in the United States. The Summit aims to enrich the value and role of SMM initiatives in communities across the United States. Its ultimate goal will be to assist in the acceleration of SMM as a method of choice for managing discarded materials. NRC will facilitate a dialogue among participants to reach deeper connections for actions and activities in the future. The key to this Summit will be the development of action-oriented strategies intended to promote SMM throughout North America.

Anticipated Audience: Approximately 200 representing a broad spectrum of key stakeholders, including federal, regional, state and local governments, recycling organizations and other nonprofits, trade and industry groups and progressive businesses.

Read the News Release here.

Summit Goal and Format

The Sustainable Materials Management Summit is designed to bring a broad national representation from all sectors involved with all aspects of Sustainable Materials Management (SMM) together to discuss, strategize and create a plan of action to move SMM forward. The NRC will use the National SMM Action Plan to guide its organizational efforts in the coming years. The Summit will be the first step in a multi-year strategy to collaboratively develop a message that future attendees and members will be able to advocate for when they join us in the Washington D.C. area for future Summits.

The Summit is the unconference. It is not a series of speakers and presentations talking to attendees. The Summit is arranged in four major topics – Business/Market Based Solutions, Tools for Job Creation, Training & Certification, Locally Driven/Local Scale SMM policies, Programs and Facilities. Resources will make brief presentations on best practices to ignite a larger discussion among the Delegates and Attendees on strategies, obstacles (real or foreseen), and what’s needed to move SMM forward.
