Education is very powerful, and in most of history has been used to ensure that the next generation thinks the same way as the generation in power ... the adults.

Most adults in the 21st century embrace the laissez faire, money profit capitalist market system that has proved itself to be more powerful than the most visible alternative, communism. However, it is fairly clear that this system is not sustainable in a world where the majority of the population achieve an affluent high consumption middle class lifestyle. There are not enough resources and the environment will get too polluted. Something different is needed, but it is not clear what this might be.

The terrible trio of prevailing mainstream metrics: (1) money profit for business; (2) stock prices in capital markets for investors; and, (3) GDP growth for politicians and pundits does nothing to guide decision makers to more sustainable outcomes, but does exactly the opposite. Better metrics are needed that cover both business profit and social and environmental impact.

Many standalone metrics exist but TrueValueMetrics (TVM), a system of value accountancy aims to integrate many of these metrics into one comprehensive framework which will give decisions makers in both the for-profit corporate world and in not-for-profits and government, a way of measuring everything that matters ... not only the money performance but also the impact performance relative to society and the environment.
