Bali has a reputation as one of the most idyllic places in the world, but tourism and economic growth has changed this. Bali may well pollute itself into failure ... if not immediately, but almost certainly in just a few more years. Growth is a dirty word, but growth is something that the modern capitalist market economy sees as good because in the short run it makes profit for greedy investors.

Bali: Paving Paradise Balinese youths are fighting to save their Indonesian island from over-development, mountains of trash and pollution.

The Indonesian island of Bali, known as the Island of the Gods, is a tropical idyll of ancient temples, terraced rice paddy fields and spectacular surfing beaches.

Today, rampant development and unchecked mass tourism has created a wave of problems.

These include mountains of trash, overcrowding, water shortages and increasing pollution.

But now young Balinese are fighting back, hoping to save their unique island home before it is too late.
