Past New Year design resolutions. RESOLUTIONS FOR 2009

COMMENTARY

Peter Burgess

Past New Year design resolutions. RESOLUTIONS FOR 2009

Here are some our the previous resolutions made by our supporters.

  • To assemble criteria for a building that will house a small-town Texas historical society.
  • I want to stop designing for a disillusioned, pretentious, successful architect, and create something for an illiterate, unhygienic, homeless vagrant.
  • To continue to refine strategies for doing everything and only what is necessary and sufficient.
  • I'm am going to take the time to design something for me and those I care for.
  • To keep looking for ways to expand my knowledge of green design issues and put that knowlege to good use for my community
  • Inspire my students to go out and make a difference in the world.
  • To wake from my 30 year architectural sleep and embrace all that architecture for humanity stands for. (I left the profession because of its lack of humanity!)
  • Make contact with someone at AFH that can use my services in Modular Construction, & on site work, plus Cement Board SIPS.
  • I'm going to aggregate all available beneficial affordable products for the Other 90% on my website, designfluence.org.
  • get some work
  • DESIGN FOR DISASTERS ...NOW! not after they hit.
  • Revamp the wardrobe so I don't look like a walking disaster area.
  • Stop designing as a corporate puppet, for not only corporations, but also governments, developers, and any other individuals that would not know design from a hole in the ground, to be polite. Design with the future in mind to ensure that there is a future for my children.
  • As an architect, I would be honored to help others using my professional skills, though I am not well familiar with the formal steps & requirements to do so.
  • In '09 I would like to get back to DESIGN. I have missed the PROCESS, the thinking through, the new ideas, the excitement. All the things that I fell in love with all those years ago.
  • I am resolving to follow through all my design work to it's completion without selling out on what I was commited to in the first place, never settling for 'near enough is good enough'. Jess Graham, Brisbane, Australia.
  • To do good (in design and otherwise) and bake more cookies.
  • well i'm going to do some workshop oriented practicle design work ...steel wood ,prefab detailing ... ,i think i'm going to opt for part time work associating with a consultant and part time private workshop oriented work We humans, as manipulators of our environment for our benefit, need to take a responsibility oriented ethic to our surroundings as opposed to the current rights oriented view most Americans have. We have no right to the land, but a responsibility to pass it on better than we found it.
  • To remember that I am free to design whatever and however I can.
  • To attempt translate sound into an architectural space, whether it be literally through acoustics, or visually through texture and the porosity of light. -Kara Dziobek RISD '11, B.Arch
  • to bring design cheer to my workplace
  • to provide useful and sustainable architecture to the populace.
  • I resolve to use the term ''ambiguous light color'' in place of all beiges, khakis, and grey/grays.
  • I am leading a design studio at my old school, New College of Florida, this January as part of a teaching fellowship program allowing Alumni to offer courses in subjects not normally available to the students. It will be these seven students' first introduction to Architectural Design. My resolution is to inspire & convince at least one of them that they can make a positive humanitarian impact through design! - Logan Granger, Design Group Lead @ SunPower Corporation
  • Finish my law review article about the negative effects of building codes on the production of innovative affordable housing. Any comments designers out there welcome...
  • Finish what I've started, take the LEED exam, re-design my own income model.
  • Found a project in colombia Make a trip through central america Finish school
  • Quit the home builder industry and work for a LEED certified firm.
  • To work harder to build a better future
  • Talking explores history, doing changes it.
  • Get off my keister mister and be more active on all fronts
  • innovation in materials
  • To find a pre-professional, practical program for green, sustainable architecture! Not easy to find!
  • resonsive environment is another way to create more alternatve for social housing
  • share the love
  • Demonstrate site insight.
  • In the new year I look forward to helping progress the dialogue between the historic preservation and sustainable design movements so that we can become allies in the commonality of conservation. Through my graduate studies I anxiously anticipate discovering creative ways in which we can utilize the inherent greenness of historic properties and combine that knowledge with new sustainable technologies in the historic preservation and adaptive reuse of classical-traditional architecture.
  • To build the finest OASIS with triple canopy fruit trees, dates, citrus, pomegranates, organic veggies, grape vines, spa/waterfall fish pond, with wildlife, livestock, free range oasis chickens, bees & horses out back, plus a lemonade stand/juice bar with umbrella drinks and a cool EARTH HOME using calearth.org sandbags and barbwire and share this concept with the world online.
  • Remember that objects don't lie.
  • To make people understand that ''going green'' is not an option but it is mandatory for the survival of the planet.
  • show how important humanitarian archi is here at aussie unis.. and maybe they'll catch on and students/tutors will start designing/teaching like they give a damn!
  • To get into a College of Architecture and advance my studies of design so that I can be a helper and not a watcher when crises arise in areas around the world and at home.
