Robin Harrison livingsystems@hotmail.com to me show details 2:24 AM (10 hours ago) Hi Peter, I couldn't agree more. I predict that our future, sustainable, economy will do exactly that. Not least because sustainable practice makes better economic sense by some orders of magnitude. I too have had a varied and long life. Artist, permaculture designer and extensive adventures in alternative lifestyle. Please let me know your thoughts on the website. Regards Robin Harrison http://www.livingsystems.com.au/livingsystems-history.pdf The economic dividend to sustainable practice is considerable! The integrating and harnessing of that dividend could out-compete our current unsustainable economy Can we use the resources and instruments of the global economy to create a sustainable economy? Can we create a new game with new rules, harmony between each other and the planet, that can play the current economic game so well that it wins? Harmony is not possible without the conflict needed for growth and development. Addressed in a mutually empowering manner, conflict is an asset, not a liability. We know how to live in harmony with the planet and with each other. The links are just a sample of a huge resource. •Permaculture, Biodynamics etc Permaculture Biodynamics Etc... The garden is the ideal environment for human habitation. An environment that nurtures people and the planet; People rather than machines are better able to efficiently and economically access the super-abundant yields that can be expected from polyculture food forests; a further reduction in the dependence on fossil fuels. With high levels of mutually empowering communication skills, a social environment where we know most of the people we deal with most of the time is ideal habitat for humans. Matt Ridley - ‘The Origins of Virtue’ - Viking Press. Human Nature and the Evolution of Cooperation. Super energy efficient infrastructure in a nurturing environment. No commuting, unless you want to. Far less dependant on fossil fuels; ultimately non-dependent. Links http://gen.ecovillage.org/ http://www.urbanecology.org.au/index.html •Mutually empowering communication skills MUTUALLY EMPOWERING COMMUNICATION SKILLS The benefits of using these skills, even in a society that largely doesn’t, are immediately evident. Imagine a society that universally uses them. Conflict is necessary to our species, without it there is no way forward. Intelligent management of conflict transforms it from a liability to an asset, everybody wins. When everybody is looking for a way for everyone to win decision-making is easy. To invest whatever it takes to raise these skills would probably be the single most cost-effective investment this corporate organism could make. Such a mutually empowering society would nurture creativity and innovation, our species’ greatest asset and the source of future prosperity. In all probability the cost would not be that high. These skills could well form the basis of the sustainable social order. All previous social orders have been imposed orders; this concept seeks to explore the natural social order amongst empowered people. Already most forward thinking corporations and organisations are investing in these skills. Send us a link. Maybe a (vegetable) plastic card that, inside communities, operated ‘LETS’ and outside operated the local currency. Ideally community members could, for the first two or three years, access their income putting the community into place, enabling the rapid development of the built environment and the food forest. As more facilities and products became available with ‘LETS’ progressively less earnings would be exchanged for local currency. With our own economy we can determine what we consider valuable. Simply making mutually empowering communication skills valuable would make those skills widely practised with potentially enormous economic benefit. Send us a link. The Corporate Concept The multi-national corporation model is a tool. How that tool is designed and operated dictates its outcome. OBJECT a multinational corporate organism •that develops integrated intentional communities, rural and urban •that develops and produces everything needed for a sustainable future •where the vast majority of shareholders, ultimately all, are the people of the communities With sufficient funds, probably far less than one would imagine, we know what it would take to create integrated intentional communities with the optimal chance of success and reproduction. We have the resources •Corporate Model CORPORATE MODEL Dedicated to the interests of shareholders it develops its source of wealth. This model operates with increasing efficiency the more decision-making is disseminated. That flat management system could be the ideal organisational tool for a society of empowered people who are all shareholders; potentially the most powerful structure operating at its most efficient. Such an organism is guaranteed to be at the cutting edge of sustainability since it derives its super-abundance from there. This corporation could be a super-organism that produces everything for a sustainable future and creates its own R&D, workforce and market, a vibrant living entity with a very healthy immune system. The available resource base is already huge including a sizable network of intentional communities. The growth rate of this social, economic and environmental repair kit globally could be prodigious, representing an attractive investment vehicle with above average returns in the money market. The sustainability movement has developed enough elements to set this self-correcting and self-generative organism in train. Within the foreseeable future, two or three decades would be my guess; it could be one of the most powerful economic forces on the planet particularly given the probable availability of non-renewables by then. Since our economic future must be sustainability this organism could be the economy of the future. An additional benefit, the changes are achieved rapidly, incrementally, non-confrontationally and voluntarily, the only path to harmony between each other and our planet. Links http://www.natcap.org/ •Market Opportunity The Market Opportunity The development marketplace is huge, growing rapidly and currently pricing itself out of the hands of all but the wealthy. It’s a marketplace with only one product; Suburbia! The nature of free trade dictates that, in such a market, the product will probably be over priced and under performing, which aptly describes suburban house stocks. It is a model predicated on the ready availability of fossil fuels and is totally dependant on that supply. It is ripe for exploitation. An alternative that is considerably more attractive, comfortable, convenient and affordable could expect to perform extremely well in that marketplace; ideally the future development model of choice. Robust in any economy, this culturally flexible alternative could spread globally. A rapidly growing earth, society and economic repair kit There is a lot of damaged planet and a lot of people with no means of support; a very large market. The lifestyle only needs to be offered. Links http://www.natcap.org/ http://www.rmi.org/ •The Product THE PRODUCT The creation of communities of debt free, empowered people who are all aware that their prosperity comes from sustainable practises. A growing social environment that fosters creativity and innovation The capacities to produce everything for a sustainable future and, in the process, create its own research and development, production and market. Creative and innovative enterprise that is guaranteed to be at the cutting edge of sustainability; the source of prosperity for this organism. In thirty years if not sooner the supplies of non-renewable resources will be radically restricted. Then, as now, the suppliers of resources will be economically secure. We are in a position to be the suppliers of the renewable resources that must be our economic future. The available research and development base is already huge. With the rapid growth we could expect, a career path in community development would be an option for all. Links http://www.rmi.org/ •Environmentally Beneficial Manufacturing ENVIROMENTALLY BENEFICIAL MANUFACTURING We can make everything for a sustainable future from renewable resources and that can be done in ways that are beneficial to the environment. Buckminster Fuller’s idea for mobile factories means that young communities, once established, could have a manufacturing capability for as long as they wanted or needed. The factory would have available an educated, self-determinate workforce, highly skilled in mutually empowering communication, with a vested interest in the factory as shareholders of the corporation. The available developmental resource base is already huge. Perhaps production would become the province of younger and, maybe, urban communities with progressively older communities developing highly abundant and enterprising service/agrarian economies. Groups of enterprising, empowered people, skilled at decision-making will decide the shape of that. With the rapid growth we could expect, a career path in community development would be an option for all. Whilst the current trend is towards the centralisation of manufacturing it is invariably environmentally damaging and uses non-renewable resources. Over the next two or three decades the supply of non-renewables are likely to be seriously compromised removing that system’s ability to compete. In addition, if our system grows at a respectable rate, that system should be finding difficulty accessing an exploitable workforce. We don’t have to compete by manufacturing what they are manufacturing, nor does it preclude using those goods. Eventually though, and inevitably, those commodities would be replaced. Send us a link. Since this concept depends on self-determination, if it engages with you then it is yours as much as anyone’s. How you bring your skills, perception and resources to bear to enable the creation of the Catalyst is your decision and anyone you choose to email this site to. THOUGHTS ON WHERE TO FROM HERE In all areas of sustainable living we have, and are developing, specialists. (See links) All too often, people with corporate entrepreneurial skills and a concern for our future are unaware these other skills exist, but there is concern for our future across the spectrum. How can we create across-the-board awareness for mutual benefit? SOME NEEDED SKILLS Website Management Corporate Entrepreneurial Business Development Communication/Media Marketing Management/Organisation A computer walk-through of an integrated intentional community would be good. Whatever you are good at Links http://www.rmi.org/ The integration of all elements of sustainable living could create the self-generative, self-correcting catalyst we seek.
