The idea that American infrastructure construction being outsourced to China raises huge questions about money metrics and socio-economic analysis. While there may be substantial money savings from sub-contracting the work to companies in China, the socio-economic value adding that is foregone is huge, and totally ignored. This explains why the US economy appears to be in a terminal slide. |
Quake-proof structure being built to replace San Francisco Bay Bridge, will save US state millions of dollars. A massive bridge designed to be earthquake-proof is being constructed in the Chinese city of Shanghai before it is shipped to the US state of California. The components will be pieced together between the northern California cities of Oakland and San Francisco. The new structure will replace the ageing San Francisco Bay Bridge, from which a large piece collapsed in the 1989 earthquake but has since been rebuilt. Many experts say the current bridge would not withstand another earthquake. Al Jazeera's Melissa Chan reports. Source: Al Jazeera |
