Global Consumption is Not sustainable
|
TPB Comment: My reading of the data suggests that the scenarios depicted are rather optimistic. 'Tipping points' happen very fast, and the evidence is that more and more tipping points are possible. Acceleration has exponential characteristics, and the speed of climate change seems to be accelerating ... which is what one would expect based on our understanding of how the climate system works. I am mindful of the huge increase in the amount of energy now stored in the oceans of the world as a result of a quite modest increase in ocean temperature, and the fact that this energy can be sucked out of the ocean and into atmospheric weather events any time the conditions allow it.
I am also concerned that modern 'success' is being measured by consumption just as it was many decades ago. There was a time when more consumption was needed in order to have a decent standard of living and quality of life, but those times are long gone in the rich countries of the world, and increasingly in the more prosperous emerging markets. If the world's population of more than 7.4 billion people achieve the affluence, inefficiency and irresponsibility of rich North Americans, then the level of unsustianability will reach to perhaps as many as 10 planets, not the 3 planets depicted in this image!

TPB Comment: This image captures the value of crcularity, but does not have much clarity about the essential purpose of the system. The PEOPLE component of the system, arguable the whole reason for operating the system in the first place is buried in the detail in the middle of the image and referred to as 'consumer' and 'user'
This is the reason why TVM has 3 primary segments of the system ... SOCIO-ENVIRO-ECONOMIC ... with the essential purpose of the system being to have a better world for people and their quality of life together with a minimum of damage to the environment and most efficient use of economic resources (where efficient use means the least damage to the environment with the most benefit for people).
