I cannot pretend to have the answer as to why Trump has a leading position amoung GOP voters. To me, it makes no sense.
The folk that support Donald Trump ... or say they support him ... must, it seems to me, be living in a deeply alternative reality.
But, of course, the reality is likely to be a lot more mundane.
Like ... for instance ... supporting Donald Trump is a lot more fun than anyone else. His events are much more like a party, and not much encumbered by any truly serious political party messaging or meaning!
If you are one of the many people that think that 'politics' is a waste of time, then there is no particularly important reason to be bothered by someone like Donald Trump being at the top of a US political party. On the other hand if you know a bit more, and know that a fucntioning political parties are actually needed to do the business of the nation and keep the country running, then Donald Trump should be consigned to the dustbin of history before he does serious damage to the USA as a nation, and to all of us in the USA who will have to pay his bills!
The fact that so few people in the USA have any idea how the country functions let alone the world, is not only sad, but also dangerous.
