ACTIVISM
PROSPERUS

ProsperUS is a coalition of many groups that
believe government should invest in people.

Burgess COMMENTARY
There is a lot of social activism in the modern Western world, but its organization is catastrophically ineffective when compared to the lobbies of big business and special interests like the gun lobby, anti-abortion and many others.
I like the concept of ProsperUS but I am not sure that it is organized for success. I am taking some modest steps to find out more about its management methods and whether or not the management metrics of TrueValueMetrics might have some utility.
We shall see !!!!!!!

About ProsperUS

The economic consensus is clear: the best hope for our economy to recover from this historic crisis is massive public investment to create jobs, raise wages, and keep people out of poverty.

ProsperUS is fighting for our government to invest in a healthy, thriving economy and peoples’ economic security to end this crisis and to build healthier communities and a stronger economy for the long-term. Learn more at ProsperUS.org.

ProsperUS is a coalition of movement groups, labor organizations, think tanks, experts, and advocates that believes government should invest in people.

We are united in our belief that government should prioritize people’s needs. We’re coming together to ensure government at all levels hears the demands of the people, meets the historic nature of the crises we face with bold ideas, and fearlessly commits the public resources needed to implement them.

WHO WE ARE →

ProsperUS is a coalition of movement groups, labor organizations, think tanks, experts, and advocates. Each partner organization has a unique focus and role to play in shaping the future—some focus on federal policy, some work in states and localities; some organize frontline communities, some bring together economists; some run campaigns, some conduct data analysis and research, and some work toward narrative change.

We are united in our belief that the government should prioritize people’s needs—an idea that is economically sound and broadly popular.

We all know that large scale, long term investments are the only way to achieve our collective goals, build more successful and powerful movements for justice, act on climate, and defeat inequality, racism, sexism, ableism, xenophobia, and other injustices.

We’re committed to defeating the lies that uphold an unequal, unjust status quo and advancing the truth: we are the economy and when we do better, the economy is stronger and more sustainable.

We’re here to say policymakers must take bold action, because the real danger is going too small and ending aid too soon.

As ProsperUS, we’re coming together to ensure government at all levels hear the demands of the people, meet the historic nature of the crises we face with bold ideas, and fearlessly commit the public resources needed to implement them.

Statement of Principles

The consensus is clear: the best hope for our economy to recover from this historic crisis is massive public investment that creates jobs, raises wages, and eliminates poverty.

ProsperUS fights for government investment in peoples’ economic security to end this crisis and build a healthy, strong economy long-term.

Significant, equitable public investment is the only way to end the COVID-induced recession and rescue millions of families from economic ruin. It is key to addressing the harms government action and inaction have inflicted on workers, families, and communities, particularly Black and brown people, immigrants, disabled people, women, and other marginalized people.

In the face of rising authoritarianism, climate change, historic unemployment, and other daunting challenges, we can build trust in government by acting now to help people who are hurting. And it is the only way to restructure the economy and public institutions so that they address peoples’ needs and include all people in an authentic democracy.

We believe:
  • bold, equitable public investment will build a stronger, more sustainable economy that works for all of us.
  • significant public investment is essential to address racial and gender disparities that long-preceded this economic crisis but are being dramatically exacerbated by COVID-19 and this recession.
  • government spending that prioritizes people’s needs is popular. People want government to use the tools it has, including public spending, to make our lives better. We will not be placated to with hand-wringing about “cost” or fear-mongering about “debt” when we know public investment will strengthen the economy.
  • effective, smart government spending can help each of us achieve the security, peace of mind, health, and wellbeing we deserve, and our leaders must prioritize those investments now.
CONTACT MESSAGE FROM TPB

Big business has a lot of money, power and influence controlled by rather few individuals. Society ... the people ... are many, and for most household income has flatlined for more than 40 years while productivity and profits for relatively few owners has increased enormously. The ProsperUS initiative looks interesting but maybe has not yet achieved the traction required. How is it managed? My impression is that essential management metrics are absent, and coordination and cooperation between the (impressive community of) members is modest if not completely absent.

I am long retired ... but trained in engineering, economics and management accountancy for both business and public sector. My post career interest is to develop and deploy a better system of management metrics ... TrueValueMetrics.org ... that enhances conventional financial accountancy so that impacts on society and the environment are embraced as rigorously as money profit economic impacts. Technical progress and productivity have been amazing in recent decades while social progress has been minimal and environmental degradation catastrophic. Better metrics are essential to achieve the substantial changes that are essential.
