My first job after graduating from Cambridge University was with Davy-United Engineering Company in Sheffield, England. This was in 1961. The company manufactured rolling mills for the steel industry and was involved with everything associated with steel mill construction. At the time the company was prospering because of a massive steel mill construction boom with contracts around the world ... Australia, South Africa, India, Mexico, Spain as well as the UK. While the steel industry has been foundational for industiral development for a long time, I was able to see first hand how technological progress was changing a very important industry ... but in the 1960s very slow compared to what has been happening in the subsequent decades. What is not clear in this video is how the location of industry ... and in particular this industry ... has changed over the past half century with important geopolitical consequences.
