Burgess COMMENTARY

Peter Burgess
Original article:
Dear Representative and Senator,

We need to make major investments in services supporting working families and in the communities they live in, and require the wealthiest Americans to start paying their fair share in taxes to make it happen.

President Biden’s newly released American Families Plan will do just that by investing $1.8 trillion in healthcare, childcare, pre-K and community college, and paid family and medical leave, and by providing financial support to working families with children, which will lift about half of them out of poverty.

This is all accomplished by cracking down on tax cheats, taxing wealth like work, closing loopholes and raising taxes on those making more than $400,000 a year.

This plan is overwhelmingly supported by the American people. A recent Fox News poll shows a whopping 63% of voters think households earning over $400,000 should pay more in taxes.

When the rich start paying their fair share, we can set up millions of Americans for success for decades to come.

Nobody likes to pay taxes to the government or anyone else, but there are a lot of things that government needs money to pay for ... but I would also observe that I do not like to pay high prices for products and services that have quite low costs but the corporate world maximizes profit as much as they can without me having much to say about it ... this is rather like taxation, but by corporations not the government. Maybe 30 years ago I wrote an essay with the theme that the biggest cost in the US economy as profit, and this idea is still valid. Political leadership in the USA has been failing ordinary folk for half a century. Time for something better.

Thank you,
