US POLITICS
RIGGING THE SYSTEM

Rural and small town America have taken some of the hardest hits. More and more Americans understand that the economy has been rigged against them.

Burgess COMMENTARY (added September 2022
The original message goes back to 2018, but I don't sense that very much has changed since then even though it is patently obvious that there is a need for change if the United States is to get back on track and deliver on its potential.

Most of the ultra-rich in the United States probably don't give much thought to the general condition of the people of the country ... the state of the society in which they live. The ultra-rich simply don't need to and in any case they have other things to do.

There are one or two in this class who have strong beliefs about how the world should be run, and they put a lot of money into politics in support of these political positions. Mostly this money flows towards candidates that support issues that benefit the donor and are generally right wing Republican rather than progressive pro-Democrat.

I am struck by the poor messaging by Democrats who seem stuck in being critical of each other in public over issues that are relatively unimportant, It makes no sense and loses votes.

I am struck by the amount of criticism of President Biden. Why? The Biden administration has succeeded in passing more progressive legislation in two years without much of a majority in Congress than has been done in years ... maybe since the infrastructure bills of President Eisenhower and the Great Society legislation of Presiddent JOhnson ... and this has been done with just a tiny majority in Congress.

I cannot understand why the Democrats don't get 80% or more of the vote. Instead they struggle to get to 50% of the popular vote and will likely be gamed out of power because of the structure of the Electoral College. Democrats are good for the future of the people of this country ... but this message is not getting across. Nothing new here ... the messaging by Democrats is awful and Democrats need to get this fixed. The Republicans are good at messaging, even though what they have to say is not going to get the job done, but it can get them elected and that must change.

I am scared to death !!!!!!!!!

Trump country? We live in a populist moment.

More and more Americans understand that the economy has been rigged against them. They know that our politics has been corrupted by big money.

Rural and small town America have taken some of the hardest hits. Jobs lost, plants closed, water fouled, family farms crushed, the relentless spread of the afflictions of despair -- divorce, suicide, depression, addiction.

Trump and the Republicans consolidated their hold on these regions with race-bait politics. They blame “those people” -- blacks, Latinx, immigrants, “limousine liberals” -- for what has been lost.

But we know who is really to blame. People’s Action and our members are building a multiracial, race-conscious movement in the rural areas and small towns that Donald Trump dominated in 2016.

That’s right. We think the way to bring people over to bold progressive politics is by facing race, not turning away from it. If you agree, click here to support this critical work with a contribution.

The rich and powerful have used race as a weapon to divide poor and working-class communities. The challenge of unifying across race and geography is real. But we have found the villain in this story and its not each other.

We won’t write off red counties. We are challenging Trump’s fake right-wing populism with a multiracial progressive populist movement from the bottom up. We are working with our members in 72 counties in 10 states across the heartland and the south. These include 28 “pivot” counties that voted for Obama in 2008 and 2012 and then went to Trump in 2016.

We have already begun this work in places like Pennsylvania. Jess King is running in the Pennsylvania 11th Congressional District as a bold progressive populist endorsed by People's Action member Keystone Progress. She is running in a deep red district that has been ignored by politicians in both parties. Jess argues that “we’re at a moment of choosing” between an inclusive racially diverse populist coalition or the hate-filled populism that is emerging from Trump.

What is your choice? The opportunity is here, but there’s no guarantee of success. Resources are scarce; much will depend on volunteer energy and local leadership. We depend on people like you to power this movement. Chip in with a contribution of any size.
