Step 1. Enter Your Company's Financial Data

Simulated Company Data Profile Annual Amount
Revenue
  • Annual revenue/income is usually the easiest financial information to find for a company. Therefore, in the sample companies, other financial data is normalized to revenu and expressed as a percentage of it.
Energy expenses
  • Depending on company size and sector, energy expenses are typically equivalent to 1% to 15% of revenue. In our sample companies, we conservatively assume they are equivalent to 2% of revenue.
Materials and water expenses
  • Depending on company size and sector, materials and water expense are equivalent to 5% to 35% of revenue. For the sample small professional services company, 'Sam's Solutions,' we assume they are equivalent to 5% of revenue. For the sample large manufacturing / distribution / retail company, 'M&D Corp.,' we assume they are equivalent to 30% of revenue.
Total salary / payroll expenses
  • Depending on company size and sector, payroll expenses can range from 2% to 50% of revenue. Typically, they are between 15% and 30% of revenue. We conservatively assume 30%. This amount should be equal to 'Average salary, including benefits' multiplied by 'Number of employees,' below.
Profit
  • Depending on company size and sector, profit can range from being negative to close to 100% of revenue. Typically, it is between 7% and 14% of revenue. We conservatively assume it is 7% revenue.
Average salary, including benefits
  • This is the average salary for all people employed by the company, including managers and executives. Average salary, including benefits, typically ranges from $30,000 to $100,000. We assume the average salary in a small professional services firm is $50,000, and in a large manufacturing / distribution / retail company it is $40,000.
Number of employees
  • This is the total number of people employed by the company, including managers and executives. This should be equal to the 'Total salary / payroll expense' divided by the 'Average salary,' above.
