Conventional entrepreneurs typically measure performance in profit and return, but social entrepreneurs also take into account a positive return to society. Bill Drayton tells us that he has been a social entrepreneur since he was a New York elementary school student. Indeed, it was Drayton who popularized the term, starting in the 1980s. In 1980, Bill Drayton founded Ashoka: Innovators for the Public, which is now the largest network of social entrepreneurs worldwide. There are close to 3,000 Ashoka Fellows in 70 countries. Ashoka provides start-up financing, professional support services, and connections to a global network across the business and social sectors. Bill Drayton was a consultant at McKinsey and Company for almost 10 years. He was also a visiting professor at Harvard and Stanford, and during the Jimmy Carter administration he was an assistant administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency. He has received many honors and awards. For example, he was elected one of the early MacArthur Fellows for his work, including the founding of Ashoka. In 2005, US News and World Report named him as one of America's 25 best leaders. Julia Taylor Kennedy will interview Drayton. The format of the event will be as follows: 5:45PM – Doors open 6:00PM-7:00PM – Conversation followed by Q&A 7:00PM-7:30PM – Reception Taylor Kennedy hosts the Carnegie Council podcast series Impact: Where Business and Ethics Meet and is also vice president and senior fellow at the Center for Talent Innovation, where she drives qualitative research and writes reports on gender and diversity in the workplace.
