You keep popping up

Dear Warren

You keep popping up on my various social media platforms as if by magic. It really is quite wonderful what technology can do.

But it is also quite disgusting how little technology really does do. As you know I am an accounting junky, and I am appalled at the lack quantification of things that are important. When I was a corporate CFO we knew everything that went into the money profit computation ... everything. When I started working in the 'socio-economic development' space, I was appalled at how little meaningful data was being used, and disgusted at the methodology being used by the 'monitoring and evaluation' community.

It is now almost 30 years later. Technology is amazing. Its use however for transparency, accounting and accountability, and monitoring and evaluation is still archaic. This really ought to change.

I wish the media would buy in to the need for quantifying in a reasonably rigorous way the elements of quality of life and the progress and performance of society in improving quality of life. I just don't see much interest in this space, and I don't know whether people just do not understand, or if they understand they merely want to avoid the matter at all costs!

This little rant started because of the Big Data, Big Ideas for Media conference planned in London you recently posted!
