There was a time ... perhaps until the late 1960s ... when the performance of the automobile industry was the main proxy for economic performance which in turn determined standard of living and quality of life.
Maybe it was the OPEC oil shock of 1973 that changed all of this. Certainly the oil shock was a big part of the economic rethink. |
