Burgess COMMENTARY
The modern over-the-road long distance truck is a far cry from the lorry that was being built when I was growing up. I was born in Lancashire in England not far from the village of Leyland ... where Leyland trucks (lorries) and buses were built. The performance of the modern truck is impressive ... and the level of comfort better than is a lot of homes!
British built trucks and buses lost out a long time ago because there was a speed limit of all commercial vehicles of just 30 miles per hour. This was when British roads were more suited to the horse and cart than anything powered by an internal combustion engine. By the time British roads were upgraded and this archaic law was abandoned others had taken over the traditional British export markets and worse, the British built vehicles also lost their local market to better imported vehicles.
At the end of the video there is a short section about the prototype Mercedes hydrogen powered truck. The basic specifications of this truck suggest that this is going to be the future of 'green' trucking, at any rate for long distance transport. At the present time, the electric truck takes too long to recharge. This may not be a problem for some work where there are long enough periods of idle time that can be used for recharging, but otherwise this is a chronic problem.
