Inside the government’s crackdown on insider trading, drawing on exclusively-obtained video of hedge fund titan Steven A. Cohen, incriminating FBI wiretaps, and interviews with both Wall Street and Justice Department insiders. (Aired 2014)

In November 2013, hedge fund giant SAC Capital agreed to plead guilty to what prosecutors called “insider trading that was substantial, pervasive, and on a scale without precedent in the history of hedge funds.” “To Catch a Trader” goes inside the suspenseful and compelling story of this unprecedented government investigation, as correspondent Martin Smith traces how an insatiable search for trading “edge” ultimately doomed some of the most successful names on Wall Street.

That was great journalism. The fact that that Mindy woman got 4 years, but the trader asking her information is not in prison yet is beyond disgusting.

This is another perfect example that, contrary to what Preet Bharara said, the law does not apply equally to everybody. If a company is criminally liable, so are their executive organs, each and every one. It’s ridiculous that they, who are responsible for that company (and use this “responsibility” as a justification for their enormous remuneration) are not held responsible for their active and/or inactive doings. The US criminal system, again, proves it is there to protect the rich, white, and well connected.

It is amazing to me given the amount of damage insider trading can do to the health of our economy it isn’t a capital offense.

This documentary project covered extensively in many systems and details from the longitudinal time beings to different targeted interviewing.
It enables me to understand the risk-taker's calls and the hefty consequences of the violated the trading law.
Nothing is easy. Love this thorough research in depth and thanks PBS's efforts on investigating research.
I got another lesson.

This report proves that rich people always get away with crimes like that. Cohen is worth today even more, $11 billion. This can men only one thing: Crime pays off.

Steve Cohen made billions on inside trading and he’s considered a great investor. I’ll be a great investor too having all the info ahead of time.

32:10 this guy could’ve saved a lot of face by just saying something along the lines of “it’s a big business and mistakes are bound to happen, just like any other company” or something. You can’t be responsible for every individual.

Great documentary and I wonder how Steve Cohen will use insider trading to improve the Mets. He could check with the Houston Astros I suppose.

James freshman was really regretting every word in his memoir. His face sank and was eating every word. The reporter really did great job to confront him on it.

Funny how they can get underlings to testify against a crime boss, yet they can't get workers to do the same against a company owner.

In the end, the so-called law does not really try to protect the truth, but simply trying to make sure the 'procedure' is correct. Quite sad.

Raj was also spreading 'switches' by buying one index tenor and shorting another. It's a rates-trade (div-arb) but he was allocating the winning leg to F&F and the loser to public funds. He also did it with singlename spreads (stocks).

Whether you vote Dems or GOP, none of this will change. There is no difference between insider trading and embezzlement ; yet these guys usually escape scot free. Wall Street owns US policy. And who owns Wall Street ?

There isn't NEARLY enough law enforcement budget to investigate what's going on RIGHT NOW with the markets. Traders are taking on insane amounts of risk with little fear still, and it's all reminiscent of pre-2008. I for one am excited to hear when the next Maddoff scheme will be revealed.

Here's the thing. They amass so much money it's easier to just pay the fine if caught. Never or rarely do jail time. Not nearly enough SEC agents to work cases & the traders know it.

Apparently the Congress men/women nor Fed insiders know what insider trading is either. Strange how they are not held accountable.
