We lost Inbox Ilhan Omar Unsubscribe 8:06 PM (59 minutes ago) to me Ilhan for Congress I’ll be honest, Peter: Last night was tough for progressives. My friend Nina Turner ran a hard-fought campaign for Congress, and she lost to her establishment primary opponent after outside groups poured millions of dollars into the race to defeat her. Let’s be clear: Nina didn’t lose because of her progressive platform. In fact, she raised the most in grassroots donations and was way ahead in the polls before the flood of last-minute attack ads began. But the outside groups hell-bent on stopping bold, transformative change exploited our broken campaign finance system — and this time, they won. I know Nina will never stop using her platform to fight for an America as good as its promise. And we can’t stop either. The moderates and pundits will try to point to this loss as a reason Democrats should give up on organizing for transformative policies like Medicare for All, a $15 minimum wage, and student debt cancellation. But one loss can’t stop us from fighting for what’s right, especially when we know these policies aren’t only possible, but popular. They are the reason I won my primary despite being up against millions in outside spending. The reason not a single House Democrat in a key swing district who ran on Medicare for All in 2020 lost their race. And the reason young, Black and Brown voters delivered victories up and down the ballot for Democrats. That’s why we can’t let the establishment break our momentum. We’ve got to keep organizing for bold solutions and continue our canvassing work to change hearts and minds on policies like Medicare for All. We need to build more progressive power in Congress up and down the ballot by helping elect more Cori Bushes and Jamaal Bowmans. Most importantly, when we get knocked down, we need to get back up, shake off the dust, and get back to work. That’s how progressives have secured every single victory, and we can’t stop now. So, if you can, chip in whatever you can to help build progressive power and show the establishment that we aren’t going anywhere. For a grassroots movement like ours, any amount makes a real difference. In solidarity, Ilhan Omar
