Nepal – 5 Years On
Dear Peter,
April 25, 2015 should have been a normal day for the people of Nepal. But, shortly before midday, a huge earthquake — 7.8 in magnitude — struck just 50 miles west of Kathmandu. Our emergency response teams witnessed scenes of devastation and tragedy they will never forget.
With emergency response in our DNA, Concern knows that the real goal after any catastrophic event is to help people recover and rebuild stronger, more resilient lives and livelihoods. That’s what we set out to do in Nepal.
We were on the ground within 48 hours and then we stayed, committed to a multi-year response in 5 districts that would ultimately reach over 77,000 families. We were there long after the news outlets left, helping to improve the preparedness and resilience of vulnerable women, men, and children against future disasters. This included:
Building nearly 400 reinforced classrooms to get Nepalese children back to school as quickly as possible, and serve as community focal points
Creating access to safe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene with the construction of nearly 1,000 latrines and bathing facilities, and establishing new water supply systems for schools
Improving earning opportunities for poor families, increasing self-employment by 83%, and household financial stability by 59%
Maya Tamang from Gorkha is one of the women hired by Concern as a mason in a cash-for-work recovery program, rebuilding community homes. At the end of the project in 2018, she told us:
“The way people look at women has significantly changed in the past two years, and UN Nepal and Concern Worldwide deserve most of the credit to that. Now, I am working as a mason in reconstruction of community houses… I am somehow able to teach my kids, who are currently studying [at the secondary level]. I never dreamed that this day would come.”
Today, as much of the world struggles to define a “new normal” and to find hope for recovery and rebuilding, we wanted to take a moment to remember with you this time in Nepal’s history when the world came together in response to help them do the same. Thank you for standing with us then, and now.
Sincerely,
Colleen Kelly
