Big Data
Big Data in Healthcare

Should this be outsourced to the big tech companies?

Burgess COMMENTARY
Dave Chase ... there is a reason that journalism has a unique place in the democratic system ... it is the front line for accountability, but getting to be more and more difficult in the modern world in large part because of the complexity of many important subjects and the many dimensions that must be taken into consideration. Some journalists are up to this task and backed up by responsible and resourced media organisation, but many journalists do not yet have the background nor a support organization to do the subject justice. My own interest in all of this is that publishing good material is an important first step, but getting to effective accountability requires a lot more ... and I don't see that this is happening in a particularly effective way. Identifying accountability is not the end ... there also has to be a process for holding responsible actors responsible! PeterB #TVM

I’m hopeful for the 2020s in #healthcare because journalists are going beyond writing about problems to highlighting those who have found the true solutions to healthcare’s dysfunction (not to be confused with overhyping unproven “solutions” from biotech/MedTech/healthtech that further fuel hc’s hyperinflation). I’m thankful for the great work that is being done by journalists such as Marshall Allen that go beyond symptoms of healthcare’s dysfunction to root cause drivers. Increasingly, reporters such as Marshall have started highlighting the countless examples of those who have overachieved on #quadaim objectives and how that success can be replicated. Marshall is spending time with healthcare’s proven health reformers/fixers as he writes The Fix: The Truth Behind Our Health Care Crisis and How We Can Cure It to be published by Penguin Publishing Group imprint (Portfolio). Only when you understand root causes can you write a book that gets at the root fixes (vs. symptom fixes that do little). He’s done the hard work to understand the root causes. Example of symptom reporting: Surprise billing. Example of root cause reporting: How perverse incentives compel carriers to willfully turning a blind eye to rampant fraud. #healthinsurance a person in a suitActivate link to view larger image.

Dave Chase I remain as hopeful as yourself for some much needed and continued change in 2020 and we look to find and utilize all available, reasonable solutions for ALL sized employer groups and individuals. While, Marshall Allen has done some nice work this year (his Aug and Sept pieces were excellent) I hope he does a better job in a more balanced approach to the sources he seeks out for his stories. IMO, Feb and May 2019 articles were hatchet jobs with slanted viewpoints based on 1 side of the argument. The topic itself was one that needs to be addressed so I'm glad he brought it to light but his research as far as I'm concerned was amateurish in these specific instances. Hopefully he'll find some more relevant topics to research and write about in 2020. Unlike David Mordo’s comment · 2 Likes 2 Likes on David Mordo’s comment

Hi David Mordo - I wanted to be sure you understand that I go to great lengths, extensive lengths, to get the full range of viewpoints in my stories. For example, I think the article you're referring to is the one I wrote about the massive conflict-of-interest that's present when health insurance brokers who claim to be representing the interests of employers get paid bonuses and commissions and other perks by the insurance carriers. And then the follow-up story where senators said this conflict of interest is problematic. I reached out to the industry association, NAHU, and quoted them in the story. I also asked for interviews with the 10 largest insurance brokerages - Aon, Willis, etc -- to ask them to talk about how they get paid. None of them would do an interview. Amazing. So the issue isn't that I'm not doing my legwork to get the sources to talk to me. Sometimes, like in this case, the issue is that I'm writing about things that the industry doesn't want to discuss. I case people are interested in seeing the story for themselves, here it is: https://www.propublica.org/article/health-insurance-brokers-cost-commissions-bonuses Unlike Marshall Allen’s comment · 3 Likes 3 Likes on Marshall Allen’s comment
